Much of the raspiness and rawness are the result of vocal fatigue and are not character choices (though the weariness certainly works for the character -- it's not intentional). When I first saw the show early in previews at the Public, her voice was clear as a bell, with none of the huskiness that's come to characterize her performance in the months since. At one of the later performances I saw, she was clearly in vocal distress and just doing her best to get through the show (her head voice was shot and she was struggling to stay on pitch -- a problem Pinkins has NEVER had in her previous roles). This is not a role that anybody should be trying to sing eight times a week and I wish she would at least give her matinees to Adriane Lenox or someone else before does permanent damage to her amazing instrument.
Audra has No BUSINESS trying to sing this role -- it would destroy one of the most beautiful voices in the American musical theatre.
