Idina said that she thought people applauded for Elphaba's entrance, not necessarily Idina's entrance. I think the same is true for Galinda/Glinda. These are characters everyone knows. And especially for Elphaba, because they have been talking about her, you saw the floppy green baby and are waiting to see her. I think that is the main reason for the entrance applause. Both times I saw the show, the audience applauded when Boq became the Tin Man. I think it is for character appreciation in this particular show.
