"why would you go see a musical if you feared sentimentality"

I love going to see musicals but I detest sentimentality LOL.

It could well just be the adaptations, but 99% of the musicals I've seen that were adapted from films have ended up with any authentic emotion and poignancy replaced by music and sentimentality. Original musicals and adaptations from books tend to fare better, but aren't necessarily immune. :)

The Love Story movie was simply oozing with sentimentality. When Ryan O'Neal said the immortal corniest line in the history of motion pictures, "love means never having to say you're sorry", I almost vomited lol. I'm hoping I won't need a brown paper bag at the Duchess.

I think that's why this one works so well; you're not disappointed when it gets sentimental, because that's not a departure from the source material, and you end up relieved when it's not as mawkish as you feared it might be! Love Story - Reviews

It wasn't as mawkish as I feared - I actually quite enjoyed it overall. But strangely I enjoyed the dialogue scenes more than the songs, which I found musically and lyrically very bland, boring and predictable. (I've written a little more about it in my thread about my final theatre trip of the year.)

Although I enjoyed it in parts overall it was a frustrating piece, the source material being mostly at fault though.
As mentioned above Emma Williams and Peter P gave lovely performances but I kind of felt they wernt well supported by the rest of the cast. Something just felt off.
Maybe its end of year fatigue for them and me.

The theatre was pretty empty but those who attended seemed to enjoy it and I could hear lots of praise on the way out.
