Well I went to see All Shook Up tonight and I really enjoyed it!
It was a lot of fun, very entertaining and there are some really outstanding performers in this show. I think Sharon Wilkins is a show stopper. What a voice and what a presence.
Jenn was talented and adorable. Nikki James is very good. The ensemble worked well together . It was funny. The storyline was derived from shakespeare (i had seen helen hunt do basically the same play at lincoln center) The scenery was clever with buses and bikes and cars and motorcycles going back and forth on stage and then that scene where the blond leather jacketed Elvis's on motorcycles decend from the ceiling was so cute!
The cast made you actually feel involved and care for them and I found myself smiling at the happy ending.
And then there is Cheyenne Jackson.
I was a big Elvis fan. I saw him perform live twice and yes, Cheyenne Jackson has that same fascinating "IT" factor, "Star Quality" that made Elvis so beloved to so many. He wasnt actually portraying Elvis. This was not just an imitation of Elvis. Cheyenne drew from various Elvis qualities to compose his character, but even if he werent in a character similar to Elvis
what makes Cheyenne outstanding is that he is just fascinating to watch. The face, the body, the moves, the smile, the voice the gestures, the dancing, the charisma.
I just wanted to watch every little thing about him. That is Star Quality. It is just compelling to watch.
After the show cast mates and Cheyenne signed my playbill and my goodness he is so big and tall and handsome. I was in the 5th row for the show but he is even more handsome close up. I couldnt figure out how to take the picture with my cell phone so Cheyenne took my phone and was playing with the buttons and then a security person took the picture. He was very sweet and very nice. We chatted a little and then I shook his hand and said let me be the first to congratulate you on your Tony because as far as Im concerned you absolutely deserve it. He just was hoping he'd be nominated.
What a sweet guy. As I left I told him I would go to the broadwayworld.com board and tell everyone what a great show it was and he said Thanks!
So thats my report. Go see the show. You'll be glad you did!

Posted: 5/8/05 at 1:46amGood to know Cheyenne seems to have remained level-headed, approchable and that all the well-deserved attention he's been receiving on account of ALL SHOOK UP hasn't gone to his head. I actually tried to see ALL SHOOK UP on Thursday, April 28th, only to be told by the box office folks that Cheyenne was out sick--apparently his first time to call in sick since the show transferred to the Palace. I got a refund and rescheduled for July; here's hoping I get to see him then. I really enjoyed his work at the Standing Ovations concerts and the New York Musical Theatre Festival's original mounting of ALTAR BOYZ, after which performance I got the opportunity to meet and chat with the really nice (and really big) guy.
