Alright, so heres the thing, I own the WIcked cast recording and I may or may not be addicted to it...whatever don't judge me. The thing is though, I have NO CLUE what the story is about. I mean I get the jist, but I think I miss a lot of the story since there's no dialogue on this thing. I'm not too familiar with the story or this kind of musical either....so, if someone could explain the musical to me in detail and tell me what actually happens, that would be fantastic. I just learned today that Boq turns into the tin man or something....this is pathetic. Look at me people. Someone help.
This is why I like RENT so much, it all came on the Cast Recording...

Green girl goes to school.
Green girl becomes friends with bubbly Galinda.
Green girl defies gravity.
Green girl finds out she's limited.
Everyone thinks that the Wicked Witch (green girl) has been melted.

Heehee, cute subject line.

http://www.musicalschwartz.com/wicked-songs.htm gives a basic context, while
http://mercy_bell.tripod.com/wickedsynopsis.html has a very detailed one. Both have spoilers.

(I put "wicked summary" into Google :))

I was only kidding around. Sarcasm doesn't transfer well through the typed word. I wasn't really mad. How do you get mad on a message board.

And thanks for the links commasplice

Go see the show. . . the soundtrack is there so you can enjoy the music, not so much the storyline. I haven't seen the show, and I don't care to know about the storyline until I do see it. But I have heard the soundtrack and can still enjoy the beautiful score and amazing stephen schwarts harmony. The songs don't need to make sense until you see the show.

Rent happens to be much like an opera, and there IS dialouge in the show that does not appear on the soundtrack. Other shows that include dialouge on the CD are usually comedies and they like to put some of the storyline on there to include some jokes, for example Victor/Victoria or the revival recording of Damn Yankees.

I should also say that MOST soundtracks give a synopsis of the storyline in the cd jacket. Many include all the lyrics to the show, but MOST at least tell the story for the sake of explaining the songs. I'm not too sure if the Wicked CD has one, but I would be suprised to hear it didn't. Can anyone answer?

I believe it was made without a booklet to maintain the element of surprise for those who haven't seen the show.
I was very upset about the Wicked Cast Recording when it came out and how they captured the show more so as a broadway/pop crossover versus actually preserving the show.

I would love to see Wicked...but oh wait....I live in Cali and am poor. I rue the day!!

I just want to know what the story was about so I could better understand it when I listened to it.

"the soundtrack is there so you can enjoy the music..."

You mean cast recording, right...?

Buy the book.
It tells the story in a darker light...
Okay, so it's not exactly the same, and Maguire can get a bit confucifying with his british speak (although he's actually American), it will give you insight to the character of Elphie.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

It's the tragic story of a really good book by Gregory Maguire turned into a painful broadway show. Bring tissues.

What I loved about listening to the soundtrack before seeing the show is being COMPLETELY surprised that there was much more to the show as far as story goes than the CD gives away. It's the little things that really caught me off guard and was pleasantly surprised about.

Figure out what you can...and when you see the show, you'll be amazed. :)
