Hey, I've heard rumors that the Maria Friedman / Daisy Eagan Gypsy is planning to tour because Bernadette's didn't? Anyone heard anything about that? How would that affect Woman in White? Is that why it's opening in Chicago first and waiting for New York?

The Maria Gypsy is just a regional production, if I'm not mistaken. I doubt a tour (with her in it), as she's linked to Woman in White.

Hey I love Gypsy and would love to see it back in town, but, really are either of those names enough to sell a tour?
And this production is completely unrelated to the Broadway version.
I think Maira is a big enough name to carry a tour. But I could be wrong. She's quite a star, in my book.

I wonder if we could at least get a recording out of it???

It would be a total travesty if we didn't get a recording. Shes so amazing, I want to see every show.

Again, its a regional theater production (granted, its big time regional theater, but regional theater nonetheless), so I highly doubt a recording. They are hesitant to spend money on Broadway shows featuring bigger names than Maria (ie: La Cage, Gary Beach is a bigger name in NYC than Maria), so why would they spend money on that? While yes, it would be great for a recording, its just not going to happen
You're probibly right about that. I might argue that Maria's Gypsy could be recorded only for two reasons. One being that everyone that really wanted to run up and see La Cage could have easily done so, and Two being that Gypsy is a very popular musical- people always love the idea of a new recording. I have all of them and I'd buy Maria's too. But who knows.
Do they ever do cast recordings of Regional shows?
I honestly don't know. I've never heard of a regional recording.
The days when every show gets recorded are long over.
A number of factors enter into the decision, including the existing recordins on teh market and how well they sell.
With GYPSY there are already 4 cast albums readily available (Merman/SONY, Lansbury/RCA, Daly/ELEKTRA, and Peters/EMI), plus the movie soundtrack on Rhino and the TV cast album with Bette Midler on Atlantic. A regional production playing a limited run would never get recorded. (There were hopes that Betty Buckley's revival a few years ago would get recorded. Never was.)
These days when major, long-running Broadway recivals don't get recorded there is little hope for small regional productions to get preserved.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I think it depends on the "buzz" behind the show. Remember that Papermill's "Follies" was recorded.
We could also hope that PBS will surprise us and record it for broadcast.
I think that's very true. If it turns out to be a high profile production (which is looks like it already is) I bet that we'll be seeing some long-lasting effect of it. Television or recording, or maybe we'll just all talk about it forever.
i'm a big maria fan, believe me. but i cant see how this could be in the ranks for any such preservation. and by the way, wasnt this a thread to discuss whether or not its touring? we seem to have strayed. i'm curious. is it touring?
