Mary J. Blige's over-the-top screaming would be perfect for Effie White's "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." Put her in a fat-suit and pink slippers and push her out onto the stage. With all of the music-world-celebrites currently and recently making appearances in Broadway musicals, why doesn't some producer put Blige in a fully staged revival of "Dreamgirls?"

Like two more people will watch the Tonys to see Mary sing a Broadway song? Meanwhile those people who care about the show won't get to see a performer that they really care about. I'd watch the Grammys if I want to see Mary perform. I'd love to see Mary on the Tonys if she was appearing on Broadway, but I don't care to see her take up time in a year that she has no connection to anything playing. I don't care to see Tony Bennett or Nicole Kidman either. Even Puffy singing would be OK with me. He is part of this Broadway season and should be on the show one way or another. This season had a lot of stars that could be enlisted for the show--Ashley Judd, Jason Patric, Anne Heche, Ethan Hawke, Kevin Kline, Alec Baldwin, Phylicia Rashad, John Stamos, John Leguizamo etc.
Of all the recording artists out there, why add that screeching tone-deaf uncultured unrefined and uncouth varmint to the bill as a performer? I mean even one of the American Idol winners of late would have added more to the event. Brace yourselves for William Hung as the featured performer at the show in 2005.

Bulldog? Is that you?
I want to see John Tartaglia belting out "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" or possibly Harvey Fierstein

Gr8 idea about her doing "And I'm telllin' You" She would be amazing. Talk about "No more drama".
Drama is spelled - E-F-F-I-E
"And I'm Telling You..." should be the one showtune she should never attempt. Not one of us could bare her screeching & whining out the vocals. Another popular recording artist named Whitney Houston B.C. attempted to perform that song in concert once and it was the absolute worst rendition of the song ever, and Whitney A.C. is a zillion times better vocalist than Mary J. There's even sample audio available at http://www.whitney-fan.com/http://www.whitney-fan.com/>http://www.whitney-fan.com/. At the time Whitney & Jennifer Holliday were labelmates at Arista so you can imagine the ensuing DRAMA. Successful R&B recording artist does not a DREAMGIRL make (by default)!
HUSSYS:
from what my second hand source tells me Tony Benett and Mary J. will be performing a tribute to demonstrate how broadway showtunes are such a rich part of our music heritage. And how it has crossed over into other genres through out the years. ( Forgive me; I had 2 Mojitos in me at the time of this conversation SO I WAS A WRECK)
"uncultured"? "unrefined"? who are you, henry higgins?
Nice gesture on their part, but I don't think that Mary J has the vocal technique or interpretative skill to do the songs justice, although I hope to be pleasantly surprised. She's already destroyed her share of R&B classics, e.g. her cover of Natalie Cole's Our Love. Does anyone know if she works with a voice coach because her already pedestrian voice has deteriorated even more over the past 5 years?
Before you all start getting vicious. Just remember that the Tony Awards last year recieved the lowest ratings ever. SO whomever they might want to bring in to jazz up the ratings is fine with me. Also; I would love to go back to the days when more pop stars recorded broadway stuff. There was a time when many artist recorded broadway songs and they would be big cross over hits.
And I also think we all need to stop being so snooty.
Guilty of all charges of being snooty. Its just that as a longtime fan of R&B, I hate to see musical theatre reduced to the current state of R&B, which has given way to thug rappers, hook singing hoochies, and booty bouncers. Somethings are sacred and theatre, Bway in particular, is one of them. My beef with the choice of MJB is that she is not a good singer and does not complement the legendary Tony Bennett at all. There are a number of good singers (including those from R&B land) that are popular with younger audiences that could bring much to the table, including talent. I'll try to be a little more open-minded about this pairing based on your suggestion DAME.
If it sucks; then we can all come on this board the day after the show and bitch it out!
this board??? bitching??? no. i wont believe it until i see it.
Bump to the top because I can't wait to read the reviews now. I'm not going to say I told you so.
