MARY POPPINS IS GOING TO BE ON THE STAGE, UNFORTUNATELY ONLY WEST END, BUT IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE STORIES AND I'M HAPPY IT MADE IT ON THE STAGE!
its opening in london and will probably end up on broadway soon after that
I believe Mackintosh has plans to bring it to Broadway, especially since Mary Poppins is being done in conjunction with Disney Theatricals.
Matter of fact, they now plan on doing POPPINS before TARZAN. So this should be here in 2005.
I don't know if I like the name 'Poppins' I dont like how a lot of the shows shorten their names. I think 'Mary Poppins' should be left as "Mary Poppins!'
Well, it's doing an out-of-town tryout in my city (Bristol), so I'll be seeing it in about a month (Sept. 20th to precise). I'll post thoughts here when I do, although it will only be a preview review - the tryout is eight weeks long and I'm sure a lot will change over that time (I'm seeing the final performance as well to compare) and again when they move to London. I can't wait!

They have kept the name Mary Poppins and apparantly they are making it more like the book.. slightly darker and bringing back characters left out of the Disney film.
I am goign to see it in Bristol too.. it is well sold out in London for quite a while but there are loads of tickets available for the out of town run.
Oh and I work near Saddlers Wells theatre where they are currently rehearsing.. I saw Laura Michelle Kelly on the underground the other day on the way there, identificaiton was aided by the fact she was carrying her Mary Poppins binder with Laura Michelle scribbled on the front

Why do I get the feeling in 10 years time Broadway will be synonymous with the name DISNEY?

But I would love it if it was dark as MARY CHOPPINS. She suddenly pulls out a chainsaw and starts massacreing people on stage, lol. That would be awesome
Cameron Mackintosh also said he had plans to bring Witches of Eastwick and My Fair Lady to Broadway. It doesn't mean anything.

Wasn't Michael Crawford meant to have been in Eastwick? I saw the Australian show, which was a test for Broadway....
Yes he was. In fact, he was mistakenly announced as being signed to play Darryl Van Horne and bookings went crazy for a day until the retraction was printed. Then London was lumbered with Ian McShane. The weird thing is he auditioned for it at the theatre I work in, so I heard it all and he was really great. But then I saw the show, and um, yeesh.

Well, I could understand why it went bust. It was still fun though. Didn't think much of the writing...
Eastwick and My Fair Lady were more solo ventures for Mackintosh (or at least with him as the driving force). Team him with Disney Theatricals and the probability of it making to our shores is much more probable... Especially since there is a built in audience.
Mary Poppins, a stage musical?!!! What's next? "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?" ....oops they did that one already didnt they?...hehehe "Bedknobs and Broomsticks"? LOL

Chitty isn't a Disney film so Bedknobs would probably be the next move if they were going in that direction.
Though I personally would love to see The Happiest Millionaire (Disney version) brought to the stage. They could tighten it up a bit and have some fantastic sets and musical sequences. I don't know who I could see playing Cordy and Angie... but I think it could really work.

Yeah and while they're at it they can dust off "The One and Only, Genuine Original Family Band" and send it out on a national tour.
"West O'The Wide Missiouri......"
LOL

Oh I love that movie too!
Yeah, I'm a nerd but I love Sherman Brothers movies.
I would seriously go see both of them - even though I'd probably be the only one there...

Kevin Kline was rumored to play Darryl in Witches for the Broadway production.
I don't think he coupld pull that off at all, they need someone who is loud, and vile like jack was
