Running costs are as well as the cost of mounting of a show can be cheaper in London compare to New York but at the same time, ticket prices are lower for West End shows compared to Broadway. A premium ticket for The Book of Mormon in London in cheaper than a premium ticket for the Broadway production for example so I wouldn't say a show will make more money or is more profitable in London compared to NY because it's not an exact comparison.

West End theatre does have trade unions, one of them being Equity.

West End theatre is cheaper, generally about 1/3 or 33%. Cheaper, yet a Broadway production costs 4 - 5 times more expensive.
