But this would come out of the weekly running costs, not the costs of mounting the show, so this is no reflection on costs why putting on exactly the same show costs $3.8m in London and a whopping $16m in New York.

The costs to put a show on in New York are becoming more impossible. Healthier profits can be made in London and shows tend to run longer, so therefore the risks are a lotion London. A show will make more money in London.

Running costs are as well as the cost of mounting of a show can be cheaper in London compare to New York but at the same time, ticket prices are lower for West End shows compared to Broadway. A premium ticket for The Book of Mormon in London in cheaper than a premium ticket for the Broadway production for example so I wouldn't say a show will make more money or is more profitable in London compared to NY because it's not an exact comparison.

^I wondered about just how many unions are involved besides Equity.

Are West End actors in the UK that much worse off compared to Broadway actors without backing from so many unions? (I don't know if the cost of living between NYC and London are similar.) Maybe the healthcare system differences matter a lot. I dunno. It's just a complete mystery to me, what with the current stats of ~%25 success rate and skyrocketing ticket prices, how Broadway can continue like this.

Or maybe I just don't understand the culture of the rich.

West End theatre does have trade unions, one of them being Equity.

West End theatre is cheaper, generally about 1/3 or 33%. Cheaper, yet a Broadway production costs 4 - 5 times more expensive.
