I hoping that you might have access to a library so that you can look at some of these:

1. Nedda from Where Has Tommy Flowers Gone? It's the one that starts "I'd like to ask Tommy if he loves me."

2. Sophie from The Star-Spangled Girl. It's the one that starts with "Mr. Cornell, Ah have tried to be neighborly"

3. Babe from Crimes Of The Heart. It starts with "And we were just standing around on the back porch playing with Dog."

Would Roxie's monologue in Chicago be appropriate? I am not sure about that one.

They did say to prepare 16 bars of singing. I am technically a mezzo soprano but d not have a belting voice. I do well with Scarlett Pimpernell/ Jekell and Hyde stuff. Range is F# below middle C to A# 2 octaves above midle C though I am most comfortable only up to F. Thanks for your help!

To the person who suggested "Crimes of the Heart," you do know Babe is supposed to be in her mid 30s and was married? Right?

My suggestion is go to the library and just spend a few hours reading through monologue books and make copies of anything that appeals to you, but make sure it's age appropriate, because Babe from COTH is not really appropriate for a 16 year old considering she is a 30 year old woman who recently shot her husband. But, yeah, look @ some books and see what fancies you. Updated On: 11/9/04 at 10:42 PM

I like "Without You, but don't know if that would show my the range needed in a show like Les Mis. That monologue sounds great! Tomorrow is fine. The audition is on Saturday.

Fantine-she has a lower range so "Without You" might be good- if you were going for Cosette i would say a higher. Break a Leg.

"To the person who suggested "Crimes of the Heart," you do know Babe is supposed to be in her mid 30s and was married? Right?"

Only a part of that is right. Babe is NOT in her mid 30s, as a matter of fact she is the youngest of the three sisters who have come together for the 30th birthday of their oldest sister Lenny. Yes, Babe IS married but she is also very child like as one can see if they actually read the monologue that I suggested. It's a monologue that I've given to a number of young female students and it's one that you can find in many monologue books for young actors.

Please try to stay close to your age range--it makes it easier for everyone involved....and try to use something from a play vs. a monologue book.

There was a thread like this a few days ago (I think she was 17?) but I suggested:

How I Learned to Drive (Vogel)
Bash (LaBute)
Uncommon Women and Others (Wasserstein)
This is Our Youth (Lonergan)
...These are if they wanted a contemporary piece, of course.

If they want more period, I'd take a look at some Chekov. It's period but not verse, the historical time isn't too far off from Les Mis, and there are lots of young girl/teenage roles....Nina in The Seagull, Sonya in Uncle Vanya, Anya in Cherry Orchard....this would work for the pathos of Fantine or Cosette.

OH--and as long as I'm adding way more than my $.02, don't do something from Rent. I love the show, but the style's totally different. Scarlet Pimpernel or My Fair Lady (but a ballad, not Wouldn't it be Loverly!) might be better choices?

Break a leg!

"and try to use something from a play vs. a monologue book."

Um . . . . Monologues in monologue books come from plays.

I think I would be correct if I said that 90% of them do. I'm looking at a particular monologue book for your actors right now and ALL of the monologues in that book are from plays.

Well, there are specific books with monologues from shows (and there are plenty of them) and there are other books with monologues written as monologues. If you look at the right books, you can definitely find monologues from plays.

I don't really have a monologue for you, but I was just wondering if anyone else was surprised that she had to prepare a monologue for Les Miz--it's on operetta, there isn't really any speaking in it.

Oh well, I was just wondering, because I've never had to prepare a monologue for an operetta before.

Break a leg!

And as for songs, I would stay away from anything from the show--but you might want to pick a song in a similar style (like Miss Saigon, or Jekyl and Hyde). Just a thought.
