MOST EMBARASSING MOMENT OF TONY'S

Posted: 6/9/03 at 5:54pmi have heard that Buckley was great in GYPSY at Papermill (or Goodspeed?). I think the true tragedy is that no one is writing NEW shows for Buckley or Bernadette or Lupone and so they do revivals, suited or not, where everyone debates their performances versus their past ones (where they got to create a role or another actress got to).

Posted: 6/9/03 at 6:08pmBetty Buckley sang the role very well, but I don't think she landed a single joke all evening long. It was the grimmest Mama Rose I've ever seen. It's an approach, certainly, but Gypsy, dark as it is, is still musical comedy.

Posted: 6/9/03 at 6:14pmYeah, I have seen Tyne Daly and Linda Lavin and and Midler (TV)Bernadette, and I can say that Lavin found a lot of humor but her singing was not what Bernadette could do. Bernadette was sometimes very funny, but her acting in the songs was much better than her scenework. I just think that role, along with the older Louise's, is fraught with challenges. I wish I could have seen Merman and Lansbury. I actually kind of liked Midler, but I'm definitely in the minority there.

I saw Angela Lansury's GYPSY in London 30 years ago. I also saw her do the role of Rose 10 times here in the States. She was exquisite! At the end of Act One, when she turned to Louise (played by Zan Charisse) and said, "I'm gonna make you a star!" she did so with such intensity that my skin crawled. Her "Rose's
Turn" also gave goosebumps. At the end she had a dazed look in her eyes that made her seem surreal, but then the whole number is a surreal psychodram. Wouldn't you say?

Angela is way cool.
I thought the most embarrassing moment was when Melanie Griffith came out onstage to introduce the clip from Nine: The Musical - and yet again, for the zillionth time, she had to remind us that She Is Married To Antonio Banderas. "...and at night, he comes home to me." Gee, ya think with his name tattooed on your arm and you mentioning that you're his wife every time there's a camera on you, maybe you got your point across.

I'm a fan of Bernadette, but she's miscast as Rose.
Sorry, but the number from Hairspray was a mess.
Brian Stokes Mitchell brought tears to my eyes during his performance. Amazing. This was the highlight of the show for me~

Speaking of Melanie Griffith "Antonio Banderas and HIS cast of Nine"????? EW! Tasteless.
I also thought Eddie Izzard was robbed - ROBBED I tell ya!
Loved the already-infamous kiss - what a way to start the show.
But overall I feel the most embarassing moment was Brian Dennehy and his truly crap speech. Rude, condescending and egotistical. Oy - why am I surprised?

Posted: 6/10/03 at 11:33amforgot to mention I also have seen the Roz Russell GYPSY movie with Natalie Wood. It's okay, but she seems a lot like Auntie Mame in it to me. I've seen other movies where she had a different take on characters, though. So I've seen five different star Roses, how about you?

I liked her as Rose also. I would love to see Bette do a Broadway show; God knows her movie career is slipping.

Posted: 6/10/03 at 1:11pmAmen to that! I'm a big fan of FOR THE BOYS and her GYPSY. There was rumor a DOLLY with her was coming, live, or TV movie, or a televised live theatre event. I think she could kick ass in that role. And I'm ready for another version besides the Champion/Channing one, as good as it is.

I loved bette in gypsy, she embodied eveything rose should be!
determination, obsession, jealousy, on the verge of sanity while juggling a shaky relationship. bette was perfect. her rose's turn had to be my favorite rendition because she has like, 50 different levels in that song. she acts the crap outta it while belting it for all it's worth. bette is best!
