Posted: 2/3/05 at 9:24pmI just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on her performance judging from the movie. I recently have seen it, and found her to be incredible... even the voice. What I think is really weird is how it actually has power and vocal credibility where as in her mainstream music she doesn't show it off that much. It was probably one of the best musical performances in a movie that I have ever watched. I was expecting something mediocre, but man was I wrong. I gained all my respect back for her in this one performance, even if it was in 1996. What happened to the great movie musicals?? (Chicago is exempt... cause I liked it). There should be more movies like Evita... discuss

Posted: 2/3/05 at 9:25pmI really, REALLY like this movie. One of my favourites. I agree that Madonna did a great job, and I liked the song written for the movie. Very emotional!

Posted: 2/3/05 at 9:47pmMadonna sang the role very well. She doesn't have Patti's power, but who does? This is the one screen acting performance of hers that is good. As some of you may know, I've taken some razzing on other posts for saying that I like her in "Speed-the-Plow".

Posted: 2/3/05 at 9:50pmI think the Evita movie was highly underrated. I thought it was well done and I thoroughly enjoyed Madonna's performance. I think it was the best movie she's ever done.

Yeah, people forget that EVITA was a great movie. I think it's universally agreed that it's a better movie than Phantom is and it's getting much better reviews and doing much better at the Oscars and Golden Globes. EVITA is just a better movie.
Madonna did do a greta job in this movie I think. She sang the role in a great contemporary style and with Antonio Banderas' great raw rock sound and the full orchestrated music this version of the score is just the best I think. It actually sounds like pop music. I don't knwo what to say about her acting but she definitely looks and sounds great in this movie.

Excellent Film. Brilliant performance. Both vastly underrated.

Posted: 2/3/05 at 10:43pmYes, underrated is a good way to describe the movie. Can anyone else relate to how fascinated I am by the who music video-movie musical concept? I just think there a angles of this movie that are ingenious. I feel like if Madonna wasn't in it, it may have been an even bigger critical success.

Bronx: Comparing EVITA to the relative success of PHANTOM is pointless - PHANTOM isn't a very successful movie. If it was, you'd have a point.
I think the movie was flawed and bland, but her performance was wonderful. She completely deserved her Golden Globe and should have been nominated for and Oscar - I think the only reason she didn't was because she's "Madonna."

Posted: 2/3/05 at 10:53pmYeah, see that's what I think too. It's like the way the would never consider Whitney Houston for an Oscar for THE BODYGUARD. I know it's not fair to compare movies but I like comparing Phantom to Evita since theyre the two recent ALW movies. YOu know?

They need to release a fancier edition of EVITA. One with features and stuff.
So is it true that ALW did not like the movie EVITA? Is that partly what led him to make PHANTOM himslef? I heard him say he liked the way PHANTOM came out. It's interesting how he likes PHANTOM better but the critics and Oscars like EVITA better.

Posted: 2/3/05 at 10:59pmNo, I don't think Madonna is the same as Whitney Houston. At all. Madonna is FAMOUS in hollywood for being one of the worst actresses ever. Even if it's not 100% true, people still refuse to think otherwise. Whitney Houston isn't a joke in the way that Madonna is to hollywood. A more accurate comparison would be Cher, who in the end, turned out to be an amazing actress.

Posted: 2/4/05 at 12:36amI love this movie. I think that she is great in it and her vocals are wonderful. I am also a huge fan of Antonio Banderas' Che.

Posted: 2/4/05 at 12:47amI, too, thought she was great in the film. It's interesting, when I was in junior high, before I was completely obsessed with broadway, most of my friends were obsessed with Backstreet Boys, N Sync, Britney Spears, etc. And while I wasn't obsessed, my favorite artist back then was Madonna. I remember listening to her CDs a lot and always telling my friends that her singing talent in general I think is overshadowed by her image. Especially when you compare her to some of the above mentioned, I think she has a really good voice.

I loved this movie, and felt Madonna gave a fine, heartfelt performance.
Alan Parker's direction was really something -- much, much better than Schumacher's attempt at filmmaking. Parker, having previous knowledge in bringing music to film with THE COMMITMENTS and PINK FLOYD'S THE WALL, really knew how to make a dynamic movie musical. He approached the material naturalistically, which I found very interesting -- the film is less a movie musical and more a historical biography. He really found common ground between stark reality and the theatricalism of sung dialogue.
