It opened 4 or 5 weeks after 9/11 and NY needed a feel good musical. it received good reviews all around. The critics couldn't be mean.

It's no groundbreaking masterpiece but it's a pretty solid show. It's fun and the plot works a lot better than most of its imitators.

Given that it has been a massive, global hit, why should it have got poor reviews?
Why don't you go? Why don't you leave Manderley? He doesn't need you... he's got his memories. He doesn't love you, he wants to be alone again with her. You've nothing to stay for. You've nothing to live for really, have you?

Wicked didn't necessarily get the hottest reviews, and look at where they are now. There's always the possibility for a discrepancy between critical reception and ultimate commercial success.

Indeed, which is why the pertinent question would be "why did the hugely popular global hit hit show get bad reviews?" not "why did the hugely popular global hit show get good reviews?" which was the point I was making.
