I don't know if it was already posted but there are rumors about a Mamma Mia movie with Nicole Kidman as Donna.
Greetings

Nicole Kidman would be horrible. She's too young and serious-actressy, I think. In order to keep with the over the top campy and fun spirit of Mamma Mia, I think you would have to cast big popstars in the roles. I personally think Madonna would be an interesting Donna. With maybe Kelly Clarkson and/or Britney Spears as Sophie...... I mean, seriously, no one ever called Mamma Mia high art. A Movie version of this would have to go for the camp.fun factor. However, this is all Im saying on the subject until I see proof its happening.
*And Im fully prepared for the backlash to begin....*

Posted: 11/14/04 at 4:35pmI highly doubt you will ever see a show like MAMMA MIA on the big screen. This truly is one of the worst shows to be on stage in the last decade and it's beyond me and so many other people just how it is still playing.

Apparently, there are a lot of ABBA fans, or just a lot of people like the camp factor.
It's not that bad. It's cute...a little fluffy that's all.

I think it's more of the gimmick of that it is full of Abba songs which makes it popular. I saw it with my mother (who's an Abba fan- not a big one, but likes the music) and she loved it.
ETA: Can Keira Knightly sing?
#8re: Mamma Mia Movie
Posted: 11/14/04 at 4:51pmIt is a gimmick. Just like ALL SHOOK UP & GOOD VIBRATIONS. It's a hopefully surefire way to get audiences into seats and waste their money. Ticket prices are at such an astronomicaly ridiculous price that people don't want to spend $500 to take their family to something that MIGHT have good music. If they like Abba or The Beach Boys, chances are better they'll enjoy it. And that leaves shows with new music like CAROLINE, OR CHANGE out in the cold.

Riiight. I rank the likelihood of a Mamma Mia! movie somewhere between Dick Cheney growing an actual heart to go with the pacemaker and Matt suddenly announcing his undying love for Marisa Tomei.
Movies of hit musicals with original scores have taken forever to develop, and most of them will still never happen despite the success of Chicago. And you're telling me a jukebox show with no plot to speak of will make it? Studio execs have bad taste, but this is a bit much even for them.

If the rumor is true the word that first pops to mind is....
"CRAPTASTIC!"

None of this is true. Probably someone posted something about a dream cast and someone took it literally.
MAMMIA MIA! is a fun show - but its horrible. Nice music, but the story isn't developed enough. It's too much of a concert, with a storyline. Therefore - fun show, but horrible.

Posted: 11/14/04 at 6:14pmI still like the show. I know it is not some Isben or something but it was fun. I mean if you go there thinking it is going to be Sondheim then you will be dissapointed.

Posted: 11/14/04 at 7:15pmSome people go to shows to have fun and forget about their problems. Groups like ABBA, the Beach Boys, QUEEN, etc. allow people to do just that. Their songs have international recognition. It's not all about the great american musical. Mamma Mia! is a totally fun show, but I agree it would have to be a little more developed to be a big screen movie.

Film would make a good double feature with "Dumb and Dumberer"!!
The stupidest sorriest excuse disguised as a musical I've ever seen!!!......Well there was "Buddy"....which like "Mamma Mia" ran out of plot and turned into a sing-a-long.....................

"This truly is one of the worst shows to be on stage in the last decade."
Not hardly. There have been far less entertaining shows in the last decade. The plot's thin. So what? That describes nearly every musical from the 20s to the 50s (and beyond), yet they're regarded with charm and fondness. The music is great and audiences have a wonderful time. Why is this a bad thing? Everyone has to get all lofty about this show as if it's the only thing on Broadway, yet it has been an international sensation, so it can't be "one of the worst shows". As for Good Vibrations and All Shook Up, it remains to be seen how they will turn out, but as for Mamma Mia, I've seen it three times and will probably go again because it is fun and makes me happy, like millions of others. I hope it runs for decades. There will be other shows with better plots if that is what you seek, but there is nothing wrong with Mamma Mia.
