from MSN.COM:

Mariah Carey isn't going to let a little catastrophe like "Glitter" put an end to her thespian pursuits, especially when it gets her closer to her idol Marilyn Monroe. Variety reports the cleavage-loving, octave-jumping diva will make her theatrical debut in a London stage production of Terrence Rattigan's romantic comedy "The Sleeping Prince," the basis for 1957's "The Prince and the Showgirl" starring Monroe as a ditzy American dancer who falls in love with European royal Laurence Olivier (he also directed the flick) in London.

Producer Bill Kenwright revealed the project, which begins rehearsals in January, during Sunday's opening-night party for his Ashley Judd-starring Broadway revival of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," reports the trade.

"Mariah wants to get rid of the glitz and tassels," says Kenwright, who is mum on tbd male lead. "She wants to be an actress. She's not this diva." According to London's Daily Mail, Mariah is serious about trodding the boards, studying up on voice projection, diction, and walking on and off stage with "grace and elegance."

The pop star's love of all things Marilyn is well-documented: In 1999, she shelled out more than $600,000 for the screen legend's piano (she keeps it roped off in her New York apartment), and even performed a Marilyn-esque rendition of "Happy Birthday" for Muhammad Ali on his 60th birthday.

MY QUESTION IS (for those of you amateur theatre historians like me): wasn't the onstage role played by Vivien Leigh in the West End, also opposite Olivier, prior to filming? seems as if i recall that from his autobiography (which has a great section on dealing with Monroe during the shoot). i want to rent this movie now!

Will: They don't give out awards for helping people be gay... unless you count the Tonys. "I guarantee that we'll have tough times. I guarantee that at some point one or both of us will want to get out. But I also guarantee that if I don't ask you to be mine, I'll regret it for the rest of my life..."

I still think she'd make a great Carla in "nine"

....the songs would be like little vocalises for her ...nothing...

the acting with a little coaching would be passable ...she'd look great in a sheet...

...and lord knows the girl knows how to hang upside down so that's not a problem.......
