Since we seem to have no shortage of "Wasn't BP The Best", "Wasn't her number the best ever", and of course the all time favorite broken record "She was robbed of the Tony", I think it's time to show support for the gal who DESERVED and WON the Tony.

Marissa is a breath of fresh air. Her work the three times I've seen the show has been a joy to behold. There isn't a fake bone in her body...you believe what she's doing and at least she's committed to her character consistantly. After seeing Peter's go in and out of Rose, you wondered where the director started and she stopped. Marissa brought feeling and emotion to a role that could be a cardboard cut out.

The plain and simple fact is that Marissa deserved to win and she did. Plain and simple. Playing comedy is hard to do and many people seem to forget that. She is the best person for the award.

Not sure how being "fake" has anything to do with winning an award. Please explain. And how many times have you seen Bernadette go "in and out" of the role? Where the "director started and she stopped?" What are you talking about? I'm also not sure how any original role could be a "cardboard cut out." What could it have been a cardboard cut out of? Is it really that "plain and simple?" Since I didn't find her funny at all for me she failed to play the comedy well.

Don't wate your breath. No matter what you say, there are going to be poeple who think Bernadette should have won just for being Bernadette and slam Marissa just for being Marissa. There is no accounting for tatse. It varies from person to person. Why people just can't be glad for the newcomer who became an overnight star and won a Tony, I'll never know.

For me atleast this has nothing to do with Bernadette's loss. It has to do with the fact that Marissa simply doesn't have one once of talent in her body.

Come on. Not this again. Let's not go down this road. I would have loved Bernadette to have won, but someone has to win the award, and Marissa took it. Neither performance needs to be slammed in defense of the outcome. It's pointless.

Thank you. I will admit I am not a fan of Bernadette's portrayal. But I have said good things about it as well. People here seem to just want to slam Marissa on everything.

What can I say? I'm a fan of both performances. Marissa was adorable and endearing, and I love any show where the outsider triumphs. Bernadette gives Rose a fresh spin, sings and acts the role beautifully and breaks your heart. Two very different, very good performances. (BwayGuy: do try to check Bernadette out. It's worth it).

I would like to see her in it. I think she is a great operfomer giving a fresh take on a classic role, but the problem I have with what I have seen of her in the role, is you see 'Bernadette the stage mom' not 'Rose the stage mom'.

Wooooo...hold up Broadwayguy2. You HAVEN'T even seen the show? How many times do I have to explain to you people that you can't judge a performance unless you've SEEN their performance. Until you have seen Bernadette do the entire musical keep your mouth shut.

I never said I saw her in it. The first comment I made about the show I ever made, I said that I hadn't seen the full show, but from what I had seen of it, it wasn't going to be my favorite thing when I did sit through it. Updated On: 6/13/03 at 02:59 PM

I saw Marissa in Hairspray and Bernadette Peters in Gypsy. They both were great in their respective roles. It should have been a tie. re: re: re: re: re: Marissa Deserved The Tony

I agree that Marissa deserved it. I think that they both have lots of talent. I agree that they both gave great performances. But I do not agree with anyone voicing their opnions so rudely on a theater supporting forum about any actor, actress, or show. If you don't thinks he deserved it, thats your opnion, but blatantly stating that she doesnt have one ounce of talent in her body is a little bit uncalled for. Congratulations to Marissa for her win, and Good Job Bernadette for your astounding performance!

Well, let's take into consideration that a lot of people are also knocking Marissa, and have not seen Hairspray...except for the Tony Performance. I have seen both performances, and I honestly think Bernadette's is better, and a tougher role to play. I wanted one of those 2 to win, but I too wish it could have been a tie.

Let's get a contract signed by Marissa that in 15 years, she does the next revival of Gypsy. And all the Hairspray fans can hold their breath till then. For such a ground-breaking performance as Tracy, Marissa should have won 5 Tonys!!

Thnaks fore this much needed thread.

I am so sick of these rabid BP fans (just LOOK at some of these people on this thread) who have a daily quota of "she's the greatest ever and was robbed" threads. There is such a thing as a difference of opinion. You have no right to get snippy and rude..right BOB?

I think someone said this before and I hope some of these here take this to heart...........MOVE ON.

A little sarcasm never hurt anybody, TheaterBaby.
You know what? If you drop the c in sarcasm and add an i, you can spell MARISSA!!!!
