Posted: 6/29/04 at 3:26pmI love HOW MANY TEARS and LIVE WITH SOMEBODY YOU LOVE from the second version of Martin Guerre, but miss WHEN WILL SOMEONE HEAR and ALL I KNOW from the first, and didn't like the new lyrics to the tune of TELL ME TO GO (it became DON'T in the rewrite). That said, I do prefer the rewritten version of the title song.

Posted: 6/29/04 at 4:02pmI once read a book about this, which I believe was titled "The Wife of Martin Guerre". I assume it's regarding the same, true story. Is the stage show based on this book in any way?

The musical is a whole mish-mash of sources, as well as an original interpretation. It focuses on the love triangle between Martin, Arnaud du Thil (the person who assumes his identity), and Martin's wife (whose name escapes me now), as well as the mob mentality of a small medieval village.
I agree with InTheMoney: 'Tell Me To Go' was my favourite song from both versions (such a beautiful melody and piano orchestration), but its revision 'Don't' really killed it. I also loved 'All I Know' and 'When Will Someone Hear', though the latter song isn't as developed as 'How Many Tears'.
