I was wondering which novel the musical Martin Guerre was based on.
was it "the return of martin guerre" or "the wife of martin guerre"?

Back, he spurred like a madman, shrieking a curse to the sky. With the white road smoking behind him and his rapier brandished high! Blood-red were the spurs i' the golden noon; wine-red was his velvet coat, when they shot him down on the highway, down like a dog on the highway, and he lay in his blood on the highway, with the bunch of lace at his throat... (The Highwayman. Sung by: Loreena McKennitt)

Isn't this a French tale?

There was a 1982 movie LE RETOUR DE MARTIN GUERRE ( with Gerard Depardieu) based on this French tale.

Likewise, there was another movie SOMMERSBY ( with Jodie Foster and Richard Gere) which was presumably also based on the same French tale.

It was based on a historical account, I think. Natalie Zemon Davis (a history professor) wrote the book The Return of Martin Guerre based on her research.

I love the music.
Saw the show in London and then at the Kennedy Center.
The U.S. version did not compare.
One day it will be on Broadway...or at least I hope.

Well first Boublil and Schonberg are bringing their newest "The Pirate Queen" before they could reconsider the idea of bringing "Martin Guerre" here, though if they brought it, hopefully they'd return to the old version.
