Mary-Louise Parker Responds to Critics

Because Piven's lies were laughably tissue-thin.
Parker carried this off with an unmistakable grace--and, as Goth, sort of points out, responding to critics is usually a no-win situation for anyone who receives reviews.
Mary-Louise Parker wins.

Okay, almost always.

Posted: 3/9/09 at 12:58pmDid you actually believe Piven? Answer honestly.

No. But I don't believe her, either.
My point is that there's no rhyme or reason as to who gets the board's seal of approval to besmirch and who doesn't.

Posted: 3/9/09 at 1:15pmPiven never had the balls to speak with the press until long after the fact; it was all through his publicist and shady doctor.

Phyl, your overarching theme lately seems to be a quest for utter consistency and and a virtual world with unbreechable and unassailable rules and regulations defined clearly and executed transparently.
But life is chaotic and to paraphrase Dana Carvey's George HW Bush: "Not guh happa."
To quote Margaret Hamilton's broom: "Surrender Dorothy."

Sometimes talent is worth the pain. As an acquaintance of mine once said about his working with MLP, "She's a huge pain in the ass but I love her...LOVE her."
For my money, the true blue, effed up, incorrigable spoiled brats don't get much work: Holliday, Buckley, Nicol Williamson, and now probably Piven rarely work in New York. Parker, on the other hand, seems to have no shortage of actors and directors who are willing to work with her.

Phyllis, I think part of it too is the fact that Piven came to Broadway as the headliner of a high profile revival, then just as quickly seemed to bail on the show after seemingly complaining about the strict schedule while partying hard at night. Then all of the sudden, he gets mercury poisoning, plausible? yes, sketchy? definitely.
Mary-Louise Parker is not only one of the most acclaimed actresses working today but she consistently returns to the stage regardless of her TV fame, and she has proved to have a real devotion to theater. I think that's why people (myself included) are more willing to believe her and side with her.

Not really, Namo. I do wonder why some things get a pass and some don't, but mostly I just enjoy pointing out hypocrisy. It's not really a new thing, I've been doing it for ages, but I did take a break from it for a while to annoy you and PalJoey with my dead horse about Jesus people and which of their prejudices are acceptable.

Posted: 3/9/09 at 4:17pmI admire her for continually returning to the stage, but I have to say that I thought her comments were pretty smug. First of all, I have a hard time believing ANY actor who says that they don't read their reviews - esp Brantley's. Second of all, was she saying "f*ck him" in seasons past when he lauded her performances? Personally, I feel actors have a responsibility to maintain the integrity of the play they are performing in, and when they make comments about the show being lackluster it makes me, as a potential audience member, very reluctant to go see it.
