or not. does anyone else hate the way the news always says a story is coming up but then wait 20 mins?

the have showed the weather at least 3 times since announcing that MTM was going to be on. i hate them
(10 minutes go by)
Still nothing except the teaser that it'll be "up next".
(2 mins)
Finally got it. Well, kinda. I was on my bed writing up some work and the tv is down low since i don't want to wake my neighbors. They basically said the whole creative differences thing and then i missed a bit at the end.
I know this doesn't matter, but doesn't the fact that MTM is already out there with the press addressing the issue of why she left the show kind of...not give her the upper hand...but the show hasn't commented anything more than the whole "We're disappointed" speech. Obviously there were some problems between Ms. Moore and Mr. Simon and even if I didn't know the facts, I'd be wondering why he hasn't addresses it. I mean this isn't some new young unknown performer that we are talking about and I am JUST GUESSING but I think the main draw was MTM and now that she has left the show....I don't know. I don't think I am likely to see it now, I was at least thinking about it before... (shrug)

I love Mary a lot. I met her twice when Sweet Sue was trying out out of town. Always loved her before, loved her more after. At this point I would probably never go to a Simon play unless there was something to lure me there, which Mary would have done.
But according to an article in the NYTimes today, she was using an earpiece for prompting on her lines and that that was probably the content of the letter.
It's too bad Neil didn't go through channels and ended up sabotaging her.

Didn't Marian seldes also use an earpiece in previews of Beckett/Albee? I don't see what the big deal is if Simon keeps rewriting the play. Seldes went on to garner positive reviews. From what I've read about the RD performances, it was John Cullum who was stumbling over his lines.
The one bright spot about this thing is that I was seconds away from buying a ticket when I saw the notice of MTM leaving the show.

Posted: 12/5/03 at 11:05amIf she was using an earpiece, it was the most effective use of an earpiece I've ever seen. She picked up those cues on the Wednesday matinee before Thanksgiving like gangbusters. It seemed to be Cullum who was flailing around. And her long (and numerous) monologues were certainly there, either that or she's the best faker in the American Theatre and should immediately head down to HB and teach classes in that technique to us other chumps.

Gladysbumps, your comments reflect what I've heard/read from people who saw MTM perform. They thought she was the best thing about the play, and they commented that Cullum didn't seem to know many of his lines.
I noticed Reidel's changing his tune. First, MTM was unhappy that a costar was overhadowing her, and now, she's the victim of Simon's boorish behavior. Why do people take him seriously?

Posted: 12/5/03 at 11:25amI'm not sure whether or not Marian used an earpiece during previews of Beckett/Albee. However, I'm apt to say no, mainly because I saw it the second night of previews and (in Counting the Ways) when Marian skipped a line, one could clearly hear the Stage Manager read it to her from backstage. Would not have been neccessary had she been using an ear prompter.

Posted: 12/5/03 at 11:26amI don't think Michael is the worm he pretends to be. In actuality his dishy little theatre column, while it does appeal to the lowest common denominator (and I include myself in that sweeping generalization) it does peek their inerest in the New York theatre enough to put their gossip monging little asses in a few seats. I really do belive that's the naughty little bugger's actual motivation. Updated On: 12/5/03 at 11:26 AM

Posted: 12/5/03 at 11:35amMary Tyler Moore seems like a wonderful person. But, someone needs to tell her to STOP having face-lifts. She's becoming "Scary Tyler Moore."
re: re: re: re: re: re: Mary Tyler Moore speaks out about leaving show#9
Posted: 12/5/03 at 12:38pmOK, getting off subject there. Her face lifts are not the issue at hand.

Posted: 12/6/03 at 12:09pmI dont...y'know..hate Sally Field (she was extraordinary in THE GOAT)...but I gotta admit, I've never forgiven her for stealing MTM's "Ordinary People" Oscar.

Posted: 12/6/03 at 12:21pmSally Field didn't steal MTM's Oscar for Ordinary People. Sissy Spacek did for Coal Miner's Daughter.

Now, now, while we're OT ...I love me some Miss Sissy. That golden boy was hers.
But I do think the Moore performance in Ordinary People went underrated. I watched it again this past summer, and it's really an amazing piece of understated work. She totally dropped Mary Richards (apparently with Redford's help) and created that woman from the ground up. 'Course now that I'm older, I IDENTIFY with bitter, emotionally constipated middle aged folks more than I did when the movie opened.
Namo's right -- she can be magic on stage. Loved her in SUE, and also in WHO'S LIFE. The latter was damned risky, and she pulled it off big time.

Aha! Moljul, you are right.
Sally stole Bette Midler's Oscar for THE ROSE.
I can still never forgive her. :)
