I read that you were going... how was it? Who was there?
Yes, I sure did go - though alas your buddy Emily Skinner was not there!
(the previously announced Audra was ALSO a no show - she apperantly had an award presentation to go or so I was told) I'm paraphasing a bit - sure do wish I had my recorder for this event - Gee, did I just type that? oh well...
The evening will kicked off with Murney, Goldrich and Kennedy belting out the classic Leiber-Stoller anthem "I'm a Woman" amusingly mixed with blended with "I Enjoy Being A Girl".
Brad Oscar then ripped into "I'm Not Lane" (sung to the tune of "I'm Still Here". A clever, self-depricating number (I think Seth wrote the lyrics) about how no matter how many times he plays Max, the public "Goes insane..."He's No Lane!" When he finished with "I'm NOT LAAANE! NATHAAAN LAAANE!", Nathan himself walked out to the audiences shock and delight. "I thought you were in BOSTON!" cracked Brad. Nathan & Brad hugged and kissed and amusingly sparred: "So, ya comin' back, huh? Huh? Are YOU? Huh?" Nathan said some lovely words about Brad, read from a letter from Sir Ian MacKellen ("Get the prettiest boy in the room to read it..Hmm, I think I DATED him") made a crack about rimming which got a great response, so Nathan repeated it and gave the audience a cheerful "Oh, yeah? Fu*k You!" And left.
Janine LaManna and Dan Levine were both funny and sexy with a gorgeously sung and played "Cry Me a River" from SWING!
Michael Cerveris: "Pinball Wizard" Excellent version of this.
Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich: "Baltimore": These broads are terrific! A witty and sharp song, that has NOTHING to do with HAIRSPRAY'S view of the city.
Lauren Kennedy and Alan Campbell: "Get Here" Very Sweet, especially as Lauren and Alan are expecting.
Steven Brinberg: "Tomorrow" He's singing better than the diva herself is these days...and is funnier than she's been in thirty years.
Seth Rudetsky: An elaborate analysis (with detailed videos) of several dance numbers from THE BRADY BUNCH VARIETY HOUR ("This didn't have the REAL Jan - it had the replacement, 'Stepford Wives' Jan.") A terrifyingly hysterical melange of sloppy choreography and REALLY bad '70s hair. One of the funniest things I have seen on a stage in a LONG time.
Jason Robert Brown began with a deadly too-long monologue about a Cat sitter who was allergic to cats, but he redeemed himself with performing one of his songs, and it was VERY good (don't know the title).
Julia Murney made a meal of "And the World Goes Round" (a call-out to the simultaneous K&E fest at Carnegie Hall)
Anika Larson sang a 'tribute' to Celine Dion that was both thrillingly sung and very funny. I was no fan of ZANNA DON'T but, wow - get this girl into another musical and fast.
David Bryan: "Music of My Soul"
Chad Kimball then joined David for "Still Your Rock & Roll"
Finale: "Hola Lola": A very cute, bouncy number led by Marcy Heisler and several performers from ONLY MAKE BELIEVE and a pair of very talented children.
(There were several awards given to people on the ONLY MAKE BELIEVE staff, and during one recipients acceptance speech -forgot who she was - she remarked that "Catholic guilt is even greater than Jewish guilt!" Seth, sitting at the piano shook his head as if to say "NO...way...sweetie. You. Have. NO. Idea.")
