I see I can get Matilda front row center for a performance, is that a big mistake, especially if taking a 9 year old ? I've heard the seats are very cramped and legroom is a issue. Also, seems like kids always get someone tall in front of them, this would solve both of those issues. I just wonder how high up we'd have to look? How elevated is the stage from the front row ?

I like to sit as close to the stage as possible, and when I saw Matilda I sat in the 4th row on the center aisle. I remember thinking I could have picked seats closer, even the first row. I think you should take those seats, especially if they are regular priced seats and not premium priced. It will solve the problems you mentioned.
If you do get them, check with the house to see if they have any booster seats for kids just in case your child has trouble seeing. Not to give anything away, but there is one scene in the musical where the characters get really really close (not in a scary way) to the first couple rows, so your child will enjoy that if you are sitting in the front.
Matilda is a wonderful show, my favorite by far of all of the kid friendly musicals which are currently open.

I can confirm that Matilda does have booster seats, they're in a stack on the first floor, stage right, behind the orchestra seats

They have booster seats there. The stage isn't too high either so I think you'll be fine in front row.

Totally agree that you should go for it. When I saw Matilda in previews I sat in the front row way house left, and I had no issue with sight-lines at all. I could see everything. Matilda is visually beautiful, so sitting far away has it's benefits, but it's also gorgeous from close-up. Also, I've heard many people complain that they can't understand the words very well in the show, and you're less likely to have that problem in the front row. I know I didn't. The stage is elevated, so you and your 9-year-old will have to look up, but it's not extremely elevated. You shouldn't be craning too much.
