Wednesday matinees originally happened because "pay day" was and is typically Thursdays. There was a time when there were so many dying shows that producers tried to get one more show "in" before an actor quit on Thursday because the producer couldn't pay or once again, that producer bounced the pay check. Hence, the producer coming up with the Wednesday matinee to get one more show out of the performer before the check bounced.
