Haha. He's Mark in Rent. Or, I should say, he will be again when Drew Lachey leaves. It's kind of amusing that it keeps getting bumped amid little obvious interest. Matt's been with Rent for almost six years. I think people, if they're Matt fans, will have found the boards by now.
Matt's a good, if extremely weird, guy. His original music rocks.
I didn't like his Mark at all. His singing was good, but his dialogue was incredibly rushed. He portrayed Mark very snide with a lot of self-righteous attitude. In the end, I didn't care what happened to Mark. I thought he was a jerk. It was nowhere near the character I saw Anthony, Norbert and Gilles play previously.
Well said, Mister Matt. Unfortunately, I agree.
I agree, depending on the night. Matt's obviously bored with the part, but hey, it's a paycheck, he's got a nice voice, and when he's "on", he's really on.

Matt was an excellent Mark when he first got the role with the Bennys. After so many years as Mark, his performance isn't always what it should be, which is unfortunate because he's a talented guy. If you happen to catch him on a good night (and really, there still are many), he's a very enjoyable Mark. In an ideal world, I think he'd love to be a singer/songwriter and leave MT behind. It's hard giving up that big salary, though.

Mister Matt: You saw Gilles as Mark! WOW! I am huge fan of Gilles' and am extremely jealous of you!
And Matt Caplan? I like his Mark. Like TheGaIsSilent said: When he is good, he is really good. But I have seen him rush through the dialogue and throw in a lot of "mattisms" that aren't really appropriate for the character. But I am a big fan of his music. I hope he goes far with that!
I also agree with the GalIsSilent. I also think he is a very talented singer/songwriter. Overtones is amazing.

"I am (strangely) filling in for yet another cancellation...I don't know a whole lot about the "Broadway Spotlight Series," but I have it on a good source that it is an honor to be invited to this event...so if you can come, COME! It'll make me look cool.
I'll send along another email with the start time when I know for sure...I accidentally deleted the email with the press notice.

Anyone who can tell me what that last part means gets a cookie.
..... lol. I don't get a cookie, clearly.

So how do you explain this to someone who pays full price for a ticket and cannot afford to try and come back to catch him on a "good night"? It's unfair to the audience, the producers and the rest of the cast who work hard to try and have a good night every performance. I don't have anything against Matt personally and I did see obvious talent, but it was infuriating when I took my boyfriend who lives in Spain and Rent was the one show he had always wanted to see and is let down by several cast members (not just Matt) who phoned in their performances. Though I will admit, there were three or four cast members who were excellent as well. Regardless, that was his first experience watching the show and it left him never wanting to see it again. That is the kind of influence these actors have when or if they decide the show is "just a paycheck". Every night, there are audience members seeing the show for the first time. It is the actor's JOB (i.e. paycheck) to perform it as if it were the first performance. The audience does not care if the actor is bored or having a bad night or tired of performing the role and they shouldn't. But then, it is also the producer's job to ensure that the show is in good shape. Because I had seen it before when the actors actually protrayed the characters as they were originally intended, it was sickened by what I saw was allowed to occur on stage last summer. It was inexcusable.
Mister Matt,
I don't know anyone who has paid full price for RENT in years, first of all (discount codes, lottery, SRO, or the "Neder bargain of the week). But I agree with you, completely. Actors are CERTAINLY allowed to have off-days (don't we all), but it's disheartening to see a phoned in performance.
Any price above $25 was too much for what I saw, but yes, there are many first-time NYC tourists every day who pay full price to see this show as well as many other shows who are not aware of TKTS or discounts. And yes, there is a difference between an "off-day" (of which I was never speaking about), in which an actor is trying but struggling to find the character due to physical or emotional strain or illness, and what I saw, which was in some cases, an actor treating the performance as a walk-through rehearsal. But I have seen performances by many actors who have performed the same role for multiple years who always delivered a fresh and genuine performance. Sorry, but there really was no viable excuse for what I saw. If they knew before they went on stage that they either were not able to perform in character or would not attempt to perform in character, they should never had set foot on stage. They can be sure the understudies and swings would be more than happy to have a chance to perform and would more likely be more committed to the role. I only wish Equity had been there to witness that performance.

Specifically to Matt, I've always found him to be enjoyable, and true to his interpretation to the character even when he is "off". Has he changed in six years? Hell yes. But I never understood the people who said that he lost character. Especially since anyone who has encountered the guy knows that he pretty much IS Mark.
aww Matt Caplan is a great Mark!! I'm not a huge fan of the show but I thought he was really good.
