So the Old Globe theatre in san diego has announced (a little while ago) that as part of their season they will have Matthew Broderick star in a world premier musical in january. Even better, its written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan. The trouble is now they have told their ticket buyers that they are going to be making some mysterious "schedule changes to one or more of their shows" is this a bunch of crap or what. I have heard that Lonergan has signed a new movie deal for a movie called "fools gold" with Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey (IMDB) that starts production October 2006. Is this why they cannot do the starry messenger at the old globe in january? AND there are plenty of rumors around about "The Nutty Proffessor, A world premier broadway-bound musical directed by Jerry Lewis" at the old globe in january. Are they going to do a switch-a-roo? Has anyone heard anything about this or these rumors??

Starry Messenger is a play, not a musical and last I heard it was doing a pre-Broadway engagement at the Old Globe in January and February before moving to Broadway right afterwards. There's been no official announcement of those plans changing or about a Nutty Professor musical directed by Jerry Lewis.

Last i hear, which was the other day when i got my tickets in my mailbox, there was a note that stated very clearly that they are "anticipating some schedule changes to one or more of the shows in the season" aka not doing starry messenger. That sounds pretty offical to me.

According to IMDB, it says Lonnergan is only credited as writing "Fools Gold," not directing it. Andy Tenant is credited as the director. Either way, filming is to begin in Austrailia in October. If he were to be at the shoot, it would make it quite difficult for him to be in rehearsals for "Starry Messenger" at the Globe. Let's see, if the show opens in January, as scheduled, they would most likely go into rehearsal in November. Unlikely the shoot will take less than two months.

Maybe they will re-schedule the show at the Globe? It seems that if it's pushed back, then it wouldn't head to Broadway until the 2008 season for Tony contention, right? Suppose it were to go on at the Globe somewhere between March and June of 2007 [the remaining months of their season], the EARLIEST it could bow at a Broadway theatre would be during the summer of 07, taking it out of Tony contention for that year.

Seems to me that they should just hold off until the 2008 season at the Globe to do the show so that the show can transfer during the same season and be elligible for a Tony. [Not taking into account the hoardes of angry subscribers]

Just because there are going to be schedule changes doesn't mean that it's going to involve Starry Messenger.

"The Nutty Professor" was never going to happen at the Globe. Jerry Lewis spoke a little too soon, an announcement was made in the press, and it turned out to be news to all those who work at the Globe. There is question as to whether or not a musical version of "The Nutty Professor" even exists at this point.

As far as the Matthew Broderick show, I hadn't heard it was being moved/canceled.
