Hey. Has Maya Days ever been up for Elphaba in Wicked? Does anyone think she could pull it off? Just curious what you think.

I definitely don't think her voice is quite powerful enough. *shrug*
Wasn't a fan of her AIDA vocals at all.

She was a painful Aida to listen to. Gorgeous to watch but not a great singer.

Not trying to be sarcastic when I ask this, but is Elphaba the ONLY juicy woman's role out there? It seems that everybody thinks that everyone should want to play it.

And what has Mya done on Broadway or in pop music since she left Aida? Just curious. There's nothing recent on her website.

There is usually one really popular role that everyone wants to see their favorite star play. Amneris was one of these. Aida was one of these. Mimi was one of these. Elphaba is one of these. Roxie is one. Velma is one. Less now than when they opened though. Millie could have been one if it fared better post-Sutton. Sally Bowles was one of these.

Elphaba is the current "star" role on Broadway.

I sincerely thank you for explaining that. Honestly, I'd heard so many people ask about so many different actresses' appropriateness for the role, that I'd begun to suspect that there was absolutely nothing out there worth doing EXCEPT Elphaba.

And even in a Broadway mired in a creative slump, that seemed unlikely.

Personally, I wish that there were more outstanding roles for people to pay attention to. The fact of the matter is that "Wicked" is one of the few new musicals, without an ensemble cast, to actually catch on and run for longer than a year. There is such a lack of new works for the theatre. Believe me, it isn't because no one writes them. I blame the economy. Producers want shows that will SELL. Therefore, we have shows such as "Mamma Mia" and "All Shook Up" that will attract fans who know nothing of theatre. Same with some of the Disney shows. Of course, I am retreading very old water.

I heard Maya Days sing The Wicked stuff and it was perfect. So who ever thinks her voice isn't "strong enough" better think again. She is flawless at it...Maybe London she is very famous there.........

Oh and I missed the al dente comment...Get a clue. If you think she can't sing you're a fool!!! Not to be harsh but reading your other postings you sound like an absolute fool.. However it is the idiots like you who write stupid comments that make this board fun to read.... i'm sure you're "painful" to be around...

Maya Days is performing in ONCE AROUND THE SUN at the Zipper Theatre in Manhattan.

Although I didn't see her perform in AIDA, when I saw her in OATS, I thought what a lovely voice and face.

After the show, she stopped outside and signed the playbill and posed for a picture...and then I thought what a nice person.

I saw Toni Braxton and one of the understudies whose name I can't remember in AIDA. Understudy was good, Toni Braxton a big disappointment. I think I would have preferred Maya in that role, too.

Zoren I couldn't agree more! The "popularity" of these jukebox musicals will be the demise of the Broadway musical as we once knew it. Hopefully this trend will not last and we will actually get some talent on broadway! Talent as in writers and compser, not performers.

(Martha Graham from a letter to Agnes de Mille) "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening That is translated through you into action, And because there is only one of you in all time, This expression is unique. If you block it, It will never exist through any other medium And be lost. The world will never have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, Nor how valuable it is, Nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, To keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware Directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, A blessed unrest that keeps us marching And makes us more alive than others."

If you go look at that Shaiman vs. LaChiusa thread, I think you'll side with LaChiusa on most of the issues, as I do.

After she left Aida, she took a self-imposed hiatus in which she got married, and had a child. You can actually watch footage of her wedding on that TLC show, The Wedding Stories or whatever it's called. She married an NYPD officer whose name was Keith. They now have a child named Boston.

She was brought in to audition for the role of Elphaba, but she voluntarily took herself out of the running because she didn't think she'd be able to "hit those notes 8x's a week".

I won't address her suitability for the role, because I'm VERY biased in that derpartment. I have noticed, however, that people have wildly different opinions about her voice. You either love it, or you absolutely hate it.

All I'll say is I saw her in Once Around The Sun last night and she belted this "E" (cause I asked after the show) at the end of her big song forEVER. It was awesome.
