According to the casting advertisement that went up on Playbill.com today, John McMartin, Bob Stillman, and Michael Potts will join Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson in the Broadway staging of Grey Gardens.

Her reviews were mixed with several pointing out that, while talented, she seemed to be miscast which I completely agree with. There was NOTHING in her performance that suggested that this woman would become the Little Edie of the second act. She really needed to mimic Ebersole's performance or the film or at least suggest it in some way because the two Little Edies seemed like two completely different characters. Gettelfinger didn't even attempt the proper accent (which in real life would have been firmly in place by the time she was in her 20s as she was in Act One). She had none of the mannerisms or tics or body language that the character required and there's no excuse for that given that the documentary is readily available. She just seemed like a regular, run-of-the-mill spoiled socialite -- nothing like the manic, self-possessed, eccentric woman whom Ebersole captured so precisely and sublimely in Act II.
I really hope they cast someone who can really capture some of the essence of the 20-something Little Edie because I believe Gettelfinger's bland and non-specific characterization hurt the show.

Um, did you guys read the listing?
For the characters Joe, Edie and Lee they are seeking BOTH the role and an understudy. Looks like they all those characters are getting re-cast...
Im stunned that Cavenaugh isnt coming back. I thought he was great. Also I am incredibly sad for Sara, she was awesome in my book.

Posted: 6/19/06 at 3:54pmI still say some, or even most, of the blame has to be put on the director for Sara's portrayal. She's incredibly talented, and I'm sure she'd be capable of a wonderful performance. Alas, it doesn't matter. She rocks in DRS and I look forward to Catch Me If You Can.
