Haven't seen what Barrett is doing onstage, but I rather liked the ending of the film in which Janis and Kevin Gnapoor become a couple. It was hilarious enough just to see that the "crazy mathlete" got a girlfriend, but the fact that Janis was straight the whole time (after being implied to be queer) was a nice twist. And, to me, it also drove home a point about how clueless and merciless Regina was when she spread gossip like this for kicks.

I know what you mean, Annie, but I think we should see Regina like that either way. She maliciously spread a rumor about Janis, knowing her fellow students would react viciously; she's evil in that moment.
Janis definitely doesn't need a love interest, it really wouldn't serve any element of the plot. Plus, she's supposed to be above all the high school drama, including relationships.
I also love how it's implied that Kevin G and Gretchen might get together in the end, as it gives a different resolution than the movie and shows someone liking Gretchen for who she is for the first time in her entire life.
