Yay! A thread on Mel! (I'm a diehard fan)
He went to NIDA with Judy Davis (aka Judy Garland in that TV movie) and Geoffrey Rush. He did Romeo & Juliet with her and Waiting for Gogot with Geoffrey. For a while he was going to direct Robert Downey Jr in Macbeth on stage in LA but then Robert went to rehab, etc so it's on the backburner. Mel was also spotted (I think) at the opening night of Rent with Jodie Foster. He's a bigger fan of the Bard though. I think he had a bad time when filming Hamlet with Franco Zefferelli and Helena Bonham Carter (no love lost between those three) but I think Mel's portrayal was great!

It is one thing to be interested in his career and know the facts, it is quite another to claim that he will be the father of your children and that he not make a move in his life without consulting you.

Posted: 3/2/04 at 3:55pmI just saw Mel in Hamlet today in school. I thought he was great! Unfortunately, my teacher took the tape out for a minute and dropped it. The tape broke so we couldn't watch the final act! I have to go find another copy of this film....

"with that anti-Semitic film of his"
when abraham foxman, the director of the anti-defamation league, and a guy who know a teensy little bit about anti-semitism, says that the film is not anti-semitic, why is it that people whith less credentials seem to insist that it is? have you seen the film, amy? if not, why not go and add your cash to the $212 million the film pulled in during it's first 12 days of domestic release.

There is no mistaking those noses on Caiaphas and the high priests. One doesn't need to have verbal content in the screenplay, when the visual content says exactly what Gibson wants it to say.

Posted: 3/8/04 at 4:06pmagain i point to the adl, the arbiter on all things anti-semitic. when the director of the adl says that the film is not anti-semitic, well, i guess if someone has decided that the film is anti-semitic, then no amount of discussion will sway them. i suppose mel should have had blonde blue eyed boys in brownshirts as the pharisees?

Obviously many other people than Mr. Foxman have chronicled the viciously anti-Semitic view of this movie... and Mr. Foxman's comments were taken out of context. Frank Rich did an excellent column in yesterday's NY Times (Frank Rich being the columnist whom Gibson said he wanted to see dead, with his 'intestines on a stick', etc.) about the hypocrisy of Gibson. This is a person who has yet to come out and say that he disagrees with his beloved father, one of the world's foremost Holocaust revisionists. When asked (repeatedly) if he agreed with his Pop that the Holocaust was just a figment of some collective imagination, Gibson has said things like 'well, a lot of people died in WWII, not just Jews' and also that he doesn't believe that 6 million Jews were killed. One comment Pops has made was that he didn't see how that many Jews could possibly have been killed, since you're always hearing about the 'survivors'... if so many people survived, surely there couldn't have been that many killed- it must just be a gross exaggeration. Mel will only say that he believes that Jews were killed, but probably less than 6 million. A real rocket scientist he is.
If this guy is your hero, the world is in worse shape than even I thought. This movie has already inspired at least one church to put up a sign proclaiming 'The Jews Killed Jesus'. Almost 200 acts of violence against Jews have been committed in the last couple of years in France alone. This is scary stuff- and now Mel is raking in the dough because he made a movie he knew would be controversial and stir up strong feelings, not to mention getting a truckload of free publicity along the way.

I saw the movie and didn't see antisemetics in it. I also didn't want to go out and antagonize Germans after Shindlers List. All of this is a part of history. We went through it and learned from it. We can't blame the American Indian, Jews, Germans or anyone for our history.
What we do now is the important part and that is treat all humans with dignity and have character within ourselves.

Don't you find it ironic then, Suzie, for the film's maker to say he wants Frank Rich's "intestines on a stick," when you say we should treat all humans with dignity and have character within ourselves? How meaningful a journey could this film have been for Gibson if this is how he reacts to a critic who called his behavior into question? I'm cynical enough to believe Gibson probably made the remarks to further inflame the Jewish community and garner more attention for his movie.
As I mentioned earlier in the thread, the noses on Caiaphas and the high priests are the stuff of traditional anti-Semitic depictions throughout history. Gibson also stacks the deck by softening Pontius Pilate to ascribe greater guilt to the Jewish community, while letting the Ancient Romans off easier.
Still, if devout Christians go to the film and it speaks to their faith, so much the better. I can only speak on how it affected me.

"and Mr. Foxman's comments were taken out of context."
no they weren't. he in no way said that either the film or mr. gibson were anti-semitic. he did allow that the film might inspire anti-semitic acts. i am also deeply worried that the roadrunner cartoons will inspire a backlash of violence against coyotes. historically coyotes have been scapegoated by irrationaly farmers looking to blame something for their failing fortunes. i demand that warner brothers begin running a warning before and or after every roadrunner cartoon explaining that the acts of one coyote should not be taken out of context and used as an instrument of hatred against all coyotes. that and the evil chuck jones should be disinterred and his body publically humiliated as retribution for al the pain he has caused the coyote community.
"[a]lmost 200 acts of violence against [j]ews have been committed in the last couple of years in [f]rance alone."
this of course has nothing to do with the fact that france has the highest muslim population of any country in europe.
