Posted: 3/24/08 at 7:38amI have it as well. I think you pretty much had to buy it when it was released. It really is quite a beautiful score IMO.

Ahhh, I can't figure out why this gem never made it past this concert setting. The music is gorgeous. The first time I heard Judy Kuhn's "Never Again" I just sat there unable to move. Other standout numbers are "Hunted Partridge On The Hill", "Warm, Spring Night" "This New Jerusalem" and "Sheer Perfection". The cast was great too, Roger Bart, Stephen Bogardus, Judy Kuhn, Alice Ripley, Martin Vidnovic, and Marcus Lovett as David, all did a great job.
They have the sheet music for "Never Again" and "This New Jerusalem" in The Alan Menken Songbook.
This score NEEDS to be developed into an actual Broadway Musical.

I think this piece should be reworked and made slightly more intimate and have Menken & Rice turn it into the "oratorio" they really saw it as. For a variety of reasons the piece could not lend itself to being performed again in a broadway house. A 46 person chorus? A 54 piece orchestra? Who would dare to hope they would ever recoup that investment?
This is the type of thing that could be staged for a few nights only, preferably in a non-for-profit venue, or a "mega church" or something like that, but profitable on Broadway? I doubt it.
That being said, I love much of the score -- Sheer Perfection, When in Love, How the Mighty have Fallen, This New Jerusalem, The Caravan Moves On. Saul has Slain his Thousands is a catchy tune with spunk and power, and the Psalm 24 is brilliant (just too short). I would love to see this piece be performed again in some capacity, I'm just not sure a Broadway house is the way to go for financial purposes.

Those who are on a quest for the recording might pay a visit to an Alan Menken fansite (www.alanmenken.info) and ask their questions to the person who runs the site.
Might make a difference

Posted: 3/25/08 at 7:10amI don't think that site will ever return, it was a good idea but it didn't seem to get new (old) items and obviously the person who ran it got busy somewhere else.

Posted: 3/25/08 at 9:00amI have a digital copy (I don't feel too bad since it's OOP), but I don't plan on trying to get a hard copy unless I stumble across it somewhere. Beyond one or two songs, it really bored me. Granted, I saw one of the few regional productions of it, so it may be one better suited for hearing than seeing.

My understanding was that it was commissioned for the opening of the Amsterdam and never intended to be a full scale musical.
Actually, I think it was commissioned to be performed at The Wall in Jerusalem, and then Disney decided to inaugurate the theater with it.

I know for a fact that the guy got busy, and then he had computer troubles. He would still like to figure out a way to share his collection, but he's got a lot going on and hopes everyone understands.
Oh, and here's King David.
With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-
"Not Barker, Todd is the only person I've ever known who could imitate Katherine Hepburn...in print." -nmartin-

Posted: 3/27/08 at 11:58amI grudgingly paid $17.98 for the King David CD in 1998 at Tower Records near Lincoln Center. I've played it at least once a month for the last ten years. It's that good. I'm not a big fan of musicals in concert. If I had to choose one show that would work perfectly in concert it would be Menken & Rice's King David.
