Merman's ashes on Broadway#1

Posted: 2/12/08 at 10:00pm

Wikipedia says that her ashes
were scattered along Broadway.
I had never heard this and just
wondered if anyone else knew of
this as a fact or legend.

I think her urn was paraded along broadway. It would be littering if they scattered them on the streets regardless of who's ashes they were.

Maybe not so back in the 80s!

I've never heard this before either, but findagrave.com says that's what happened.

The reason why I am having trouble beleaving that story fully is because when she died Times square was a total dump. And the cops were known to be much stricter in the times square of the 80's then today. NYC cops have always been anal about things like littering etc.

If its true they would have been scattered well away from Times Sq -around the Broadway Theatre around 53 to 55th etc -'Gypsy'
(there wouldnt have been that many ashes to go right down Broadway anyway-i know she was big but not that big!)

Hahaha...I would not have a problem with it...

In December 2007, the New York Post mentioned in an article that her close friend Tony Cointreau (heir to the liquor fortune) keeps her ashes in a closet in his Park Avenue home.

Interesting replies. I tend to believe
that maybe some of her ashes were put
around the theaters she worked at...and
possibly it's true that her urn of ashes
is kept by her friend.

Now the ghost stories at Sardi's gets a
little crazy.
