Great choreographers like Robbins and Graham and Kidd did such amazing work on the Broadway stage. The sad fact is that their work is often lost. Or is it? We've seen some amazing footage show up you-know-where this week from Mama and Funny Girls. Well, guess what, there is TONS of that stuff. I know a guy in Los Angeles who has a closet FULL of tiny film reels. Each one is a home movie shot from the audience, fifteen to twenty minutes of mostly color film going back to the revival of Showboat in 1932 and including absolutely ever other big name show up to and including Camelot.
He showed me a few and I nearly dropped dead. What this one guy has, and what he is not sharing with anyone else, is amazing. And I met a guy in the 1970's who shows me early videotape (on a one inch machine) of bootleg stuff from the 50's 60's and 70's.
It's amazing what is out there, waiting to be discovered.

"Biographical sources generally give Mr. Kidd’s age as 88, but Mr. Greenwald said his uncle was actually 92"
92 is a great age to go at. His work was brilliant and legendary and will live on forever.
I think his ‘dash’ is very impressive.

Posted: 12/24/07 at 8:38pmThe very first show I ever saw (at age 6) was the touring company of the original Guys and Dolls. It hooked me forever, no doubt in part to Kidd's brilliant choreography. He was one of the great ones. Pace.

B3, you have no idea. I begged these people to let me get them a film deal or a DVD deal for the material, but I suppose then, it wouldn't be theirs alone.
Have you seen the amazing footage from the '40 production of Pal Joey? Kelly, in color, dancing EXACTLY as he does in the MGM movies? Amazing stuff. Imagine a closet full of that stuff.
It breaks the heart.

He was one of the last of the great Golden Age choreographers around.
Another link to that glorious time gone.
It's so sad.
RIP
