with Legaly Blonde on stage do you think Miss Congeniality could work? I think it could
with the same team who brought hairspray did It.it would be brilliant.
How about we get some original musicals coming. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Legally Blonde, but let's not turn Broadway into a complete "movie gone musical" thing. I'm getting sick of people thinking of brilliant ideas for movies gone musicals, why not think of a brilliant ORIGINAL idea.
No.

You do realize that there are very few COMPLETELY original musicals, right? Almost every musical has been based off of some other previous work (i.e. books, plays, biographies, paintings, short stories, etc.)
I would love this
Yeah, I know, but enough movie musicals. Its just trying to mainstream theatre.
I don't have a problem with musicals being based off of movies, books, etc, as long as they're good. I love the movie but I think Miss Congeniality would make a horrible musical.
Puke.
All "it's" doing is taking a story and changing around the script, writing ORIGINAL music and lyrics for it, adding new ORIGINAL direction, and some ORIGINAL choreography.
It's trying to take something known and present it in an ORIGINAL way.
I hate when people come out and say "it's trying to mainstream theatre" or "it's trying to dumb down theatre." Theatre has to somewhat evolve with the times. These "movie musicals" are getting people to come to the theatre who normally wouldn't. And, perhaps, if they like the show enough, they'll be motivated to see something they're not familiar with. Thus, it creates another avid theatregoer.
The only people who see the "original" musicals are those who go to the theatre very frequently and who like to see new and unfamiliar things. If Broadway had to survive on only these people...no money would be made.
For each one movie musical...there are a dozen other musicals written that aren't based on a movie.
Personally I applaud any show that is entertaining and has a production staff that actually puts effort into making something worthwhile. Whether it's a movie musical, a musical based off of another previous work or a completely original musical.
As long as it's not lazy and haphazardly put together...I believe it deserves a shot on Broadway.
