WOW.

Just got back from the show. The girls were pretty much AMAZING. I'll write up a review later, but I'm going out now.

FYI - Kathy Deitch: SO sassy, but you'll hear it about it later.

Nice job Scott and Sabrina, though whoever typed up those programs should learn to proofread... re: Monday Nights New Voices

Anyway, review later, but the show was EXCELLENT.
If you're free next week, DEFINITELY stop by the Duplex, it should be another amazing night.

I think everyone that was there can safely say that the first New Voices night was a HUGE success. The place was packed, and the women were amazing...

Nikki Renee Daniels- sang "Home" and "Way Back From Paradise." She was wonderful, so young but so talented... and it was her birthday yesterday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

Kathy Deitch sang- sang "The Wizard and I" and "One Night Only." I only knew her from Wicked ensemble before last night, but dam this girl can sing... and she mentioned Idina and dedicated the song to her, it was so nice.

Lauren Thomas- sang "Since You Stayed Here" and "Stranger in the Rain." I felt bad not knowing who she was before the show BUT EVERYONE does now... she's a great upcoming performer.

Zakiya Young- sang "I Got Love" and "The Story Goes On." Her voice was so powerful and moving and she was so nice...

Sara Schmidt- sang "Total Eclpise of the HEART" (I know, it's not SUN... no matter what the programs said! Who made those anyway!? Geeze... REVIEW) and "Once Upon A Time." I only heard her sing at Kitchen Sink a few weeks ago, and it was such a pleasure to see her performing again. She is AMAZING, to be so young and so talented, it's nuts. Seriously, someone please tell me when Eden will be out cause I'd love to see this girl in BKLYN. GOOD JOB SARA!

Jenna Leigh Green- GREAT host... and also took on the role of performer by finishing the show with Scott Alan's "If I Own Today." She was awesome... she did a really great job with it.

And to my dear Scott and Sabrina... congrats on a wonderful night. It definetely set the precedence for future showcases... you two are unstoppable!!! REVIEW

AND DON'T FORGET... NEXT MONDAY, JAN. 17TH, SAME TIME, SAME PLACE.... THERE IS A SCOTT ALAN SHOWCASE FEATURING SHOSHANA BEAN, STEPHANIE BLOCK, LISA BRESCIA AND JOHN HILL (seriously... how kick a$$ is that lineup!?) Updated On: 1/11/05 at 11:50 AM

OK.

Nikki Rene was up first so I'll start with her. She opened the show with "Home" from The Wiz and I'm happy to report that I've FINALLY heard someone sing this sung the way I've always thought it could be. I apologize in advance for not being alive when it was on Broadway and subsequently not being able to compare it to Stephanie Mills, but Nikki Rene (one e or two?) really nailed it. She jumped on octave on the third "it's real" near the end, and she riffed the sh*t out of the song. Excellent. I would have liked to tweak the phrasing JUUUUUST a little and connected some more stuff, but I'm never satisfied.

Next up was Sarah Schmidt singing “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” Yes, THAT “Total Eclipse of the Heart” – (Turn around, every now and then I get a little bit…, etc.). This is the first time I’ve really heard Sarah sing and WHOA. If you’re familiar with Lisa Brescia, you may be aware of her belt. She places everything really forward and when she opens her mouth just a little this HUGE belt comes out and it’s really powerful. Now imagine that – pardon my third-grade writing, but – multiply that by A THOUSAND. The way Sarah sings, it’s not even like she’s placing everything at the front of her throat, it’s so far forward it’s like it’s halfway across the room. She opened her mouth – and I was in the back of the room – and I was BLOWN away. I still can’t believe the power that came out of that little girl on EVERY note. Crazy.

Next was Zakiya Young who sang “I Got Love.” I saw Melba Moore perform it at Queer Songbook, so maybe I’m just spoiled. I’ll give her that her delivery was really adorable, but she mixed the entire thing when I wouldn’t have hated a little more belting.

Lauren Thomas was next with “Since You Stayed Here” from Brownstone. Wow. First of all, she could be a model. Second of all, she’s an amazing performer. The song is really pretty and her voice was beautiful. It was just a really nice performance.

Cut to Kathy Deitch. Seriously. First, she sang “The Wizard and I,” which, as you may have gathered, I definitely enjoyed. She kind of lost me a little at the tempo change; she went up on “feeling things I’ve never felt” and it wasn’t flawless. BUT! She recovered with the SASSIEST ending of “The Wizard and I” that I have ever heard…and that’s including Shoshana Bean. I actually jumped when she did it. I don’t really know how to explain it, so I’ll get back to you.

Then Kathy sang her own arrangement of “One Night Only,” which I definitely didn’t hate. She slowed the whole thing down and then when she went into the last chorus, she scooped up into this crazy key and belted her face off. It was excellent.

Then we go back to Sarah who sang “Once Upon a Time.” OK. *Deep breath and sigh* She sounded very nervous… She dropped both of the crazy belt notes. Like she just lost her breath and her voice gave out, which SUCKED because she NAILED the rest of the song. It was really fierce; she even worked in a growl à la Emily Skinner! But yeah, she just sounded SO nervous and I can’t blame her, that song is CRAZY. She really did an amazing job with the rest, and honestly, I’m glad that she didn’t hit them because the way she sings…well I didn’t see how it could end well. She still has a crazy belt and she can have an A for effort.

I'll wrap up the rest, since no one cares.
