i can't say I am very familiar with regional theatres in Montreal.
i usually only go to shows that are on national tour.
National tours usually play at a place called Place des Arts
here is the website. The venue usually has many other varieties of things so you can check it out!

if I think of something else I'll edit the post!

Do you understand French? I say this because a lot of the smaller venues only work in French. It's a Quebec(ois) thing.

Centaur does work in English and has an excellent reputation.
theatre du nouveau monde does classics( mostly in French) also a good rep
http://theatrelalicorne.com/ completly French w special emphasis on the Quebec identity. Can't speak to its rep/quality..

Thanks, SabreLady~ I didn't do well with high school French... but I have seen a few foreign language theater performances, without supertitles( in Spain and Israel) just for the experience. Your info is helpful. Thanks.
Sometimes these little jewels can make a difference.

Hi there
please let me know the dates that you'll be coming and I will help you with some restaurants and shows. I just got back from New York City and had the most amazing time seeing seven shows in five days including Hamilton misery Lazarus and school of rock among others. These four where the highlights for us. Awaiting your dates and will give you some great suggestions.......

Well, now is probably the absolute worst time of the year to be in Montreal. Summer is where it's at - Jazz Fest, Just for Laughs, Circus Fest, Francofolies - it's basically a non-stop (mostly free!) street party.
That being said, I'd second Place des Arts.
How is your French?

I would suggest checking out the Segal Centre http://www.segalcentre.org/ for English shows

It is so generous of you and several others to post links and guidance. Thank you all.
If you have any recommendations about restaurants, it is also appreciated.

True segal centre has shows in English.i only went once to see the apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz so didn't remember but yes definitely check that one out.
downtown montreal has a few malls downtown that are connected from inside. Tourists have stopped me from time to time to ask for how to walk through one mall to another.
if you like museum there is Musee des beaux arts. It's certainly not as big as say the MET in New York city but there are still things to see.
As for food one of the signature thing will be poutine (fries with cheese and gravy).
another recommendation would be Schwartz's.

Poutine does seem to be popping up everywhere w gourmet versions trying to raise this heart attack on a plate to new cultural standards.
Tourtiere is also a regional dish, a meat pie , usually made with finely diced pork, veal or beef w wild game added sometimes Traditionally eaten New Years but avail year round.
Smoked meat @ Schwartz's is delish but also not heart friendly sodium AND fat abounding but hey u only live once!
Also look out for maple sugar dishes it's the REAL stuff and a guilty pleasure of mine.
They also do fine Continental cuisine but i'm too cheap! ;D
