Saw the world premiere production of Moonshadow a new musical by Cat Stevens in Melbourne Australia yesterday.
Where to begin? Point form might be the best.
: Moonshadow is a seven foot blue dwarf (?) who wears a half moon mask.
: The show is full of so many WTF moments, Including a 60's Hair love in, a bubble machine that showers the stalls in bubbles and glitter, a rip off of the queen from Tommy and We Will Rock You!
: More Jazz hands and sparkle fingers, than a full Fosse concert, a rap dancing scene that uses sparkle fingers as the highlight.
: A dead bird that is given as a gift, and than kept for most of the show!
: Costumes that have been left over or stolen from Rocky Horror.
: A story that makes no sense what so ever, at one point it looked like the Flash Gordon movie from the early 80's
: Video Projections, some which worked, most did not.
: The show ended with a few Cat Stevens songs that could not be worked into the story.
: A voice over that needed to fill in some of the plot points!
: Some of Cats songs worked really well, advance the scene. Most where random.
Cast wise, Gemma-Ashley Kaplan was the stand out ( someone give this young lady the lead in Evita! )
Did I have fun, of course! This was a train wreck with each new scene topping the last in moments of what where they thinking. Theatre was 90 per cent full, show closes next Sunday.
