Another casting change for SLY FOX was announced today on Playbill.com. Jason Kravitz (formerly of "The Practice") is taking over the role of Lawyer Craven for Bronson Pinchot, who is moving up to the lead role of Simon Able, currently being played by Eric Stoltz. I think this is excellent casting. In my opinion, Eric Stoltz was the biggest problem with the original cast. He just wasn't funny or engaged with the other cast members. Elizabeth Berkley as Mrs. Truckle was the other weak link. With Bronson Pinchot and Rachel York now handling these key roles, the play should move along at a much better pace with more consistent laughs. Both Simon Able and Mrs. Truckle interact a great deal with Sly, and poor Richard Dreyfuss suffered in those scenes because he got nothing back from either Stoltz or Berkley. The repartee now should crackle because both Bronson and Rachel are expert comic actors whom the producers obviously see as strong and versatile. Richard Kind is a lucky man to be playing opposite these two.
I also think that Jason Kravitz will be terrific as Craven. He was the ADA you love to hate on "The Practice," and he should be perfect playing yet another oily lawyer. The previously mentioned Carol Kane will be a riot, too.
It says a lot that Bronson Pinchot and Rachel York have been retained and switched into pivotal roles. They are clearly considered to be stars who can not only improve the show but continue to draw an audience. I know I plan to see it again because of this.
