IMO, The Pajama Game was the best show they've done in about 5 years.

This season is by far the worst in recent memory.

my concern is that its shaping up to be seasons (plural) that are "the worst in memory" ... i cant believe that two years milquetoast programming and serial production swaps aren't raising eyebrows up the food chain.

They're usually very good with musical revivals - 110 in the Shade, Assassins, Nine, PJ Game, Big River, Cabaret....all great.

The play choices? Old, dull, with little room for interpretation. Too safe.

Linney in Liaisons definitely sounds intriguing.

The bye bye Birdie rumors are true. They are doing a workshop of the show in August to research what kind of changes need to be made in the event of the show being on their '08-'09 season. Casting is happening right now.

Other than that, did you enjoy the play Mrs Lincoln?

Casting is happening for the WORKSHOP now. No revival is set in stone.

whatever: You cannot place blame for productions falling through. It happens. It's the nature of the business. Roundabout announces their full season almost an entire season in advance. Things don't always work out. It's the nature of the business, and nearly all subscribers and true lovers of the theatre understand this.

Plus, it's not something that habitually happens at roundabout. 2 shows were canceled this past season - 1 because of Laura Linney's availability, and the other because of something fishy with THE HOME PLACE - supposedly equity problems and rights issues. It's not really fair to place blame and to start assuming things. 1 show was cancelled, 1 was rescheduled. Worse things have happened.

And yes, some of us at Roundabout are starting to question Todd Haim's path.

And just because a certain show doesn't soun thrilling on paper doesn't mean that it won't be excellent - just look at THE CONSTANT WIFE last season.

Every major company that produces 8 or 9 Broadway and off-Broadway shows a year will faulter every now and then. And I think you will find that if you go back, you will see that Roundabout has an overwhelmingly positive track record.

sorry, hit "post" too quickly.

i also agree that in general one cant place blame when productions fall through, it does give one pause when too many happen too close together ... it could be bad luck, or it could be a sign of deeper problems.

Who knows.

CABARET may not even be included as one of our typical 8-season shows.

PYGMALION might get a brilliant recreation with a stellar cast.

You just don't know.

I do agree that this past season was boring. The only shows I liked were SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER and 110 IN THE SHADE, with vague and mild enthusiasm for THE APPLE TREE.

And although I hated HEARTBREAK HOUSE and PRELUDE TO A KISS, they were critically acclaimed and the general consensus is that the audience loved them.

HOWARD KATZ was a complete failure, and we'll see what's in store for OLD ACQUAINTANCE and BEYOND GLORY.

But still - even with that - only 1 shows was a complete and utter waste of time - HOWARD KATZ.

So although HEARTBREAK and PRELUDE don't thrill anyone on these boards - you have to admit that KATZ was the only failure. Not too bad.

And I walked out of both at intermission. I certainly wasn't the only one. I actually can't remember the last time I walked out at intermission. Oh wait, I can.....it was The Caretaker. I can't remember ever leaving at intermission at others. Ever.
I guess my patience has waned over the years for sitting through something I'm really disliking for one reason or another....usually from extreme boredom.

So apparently Jefferson Mays is set to star as Professor Higgins in PYGMALION.

Pygmalion can only be better that awful Amanda Plummer version.

The Ritz with Perez... I'm howling already. Glad that McNally is letting it be done again.

What is the buzz on the overwhelming? I am thinking of re-subscribing, but I need to decide which plan I want.

All I know is that between Young Frankenstein and Sunday in the Park With George, next springbreak is going to be AMAZING.

I saw the Amanda Plummer version but she wasn't in the performance I saw. I mainly went to see Peter O'Toole and I thought he was wonderful for the part - very crotchety and self-centered, and managed a lot of physical comedy that I would not have expected of him. But I happen to love the Shaw play, so I was thrilled just to see it in a production for the first time in my life. And Jefferson Mays will be an interesting Higgins -

Question - will I have to subscribe to the whole season to get a decent ticket to this play? Updated On: 5/28/07 at 11:19 AM

I've been doing partial subscriptions for the last 5 years and have always gotten excellent seats: first row mezzanine at American Airlines; Row H center at Laura Pels and Row J center at Studio 54.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Keen, you don't need to subscribe to get tickets. Almost all Roundabout shows end up being discounted, except some hits like The Pajama Game.

"The Ritz" is going to star Kevin Chamberlin with have sets by Scott Pask and costumes by my buddy William Ivey Long. If it were not for the fact that I won't be around for it, I would be interested.

Am I the only one who does not want to see Kevin Chamberlin running around the stage in just a towel?
(I mean he is a wonderful actor, but unless Matt Cavenaugh is playing the undercover cop, I'm not going.)
