totally agree with chicago...but again I went in with high expectations..also, maybe part of the problem was that I was it when Paige Davis was Roxie and I did not care for her performance at all.

Phantom by far. I remember when my father bought the album when the show opened, (yes album, in fact it may have been one of the last cast albums he bought, I think the great switch to cd/tapes happend around this time). I was so young and i just remember getting all of these mental images of what the show would look like and how it was performed. It didnt help that when we took a trip to Toronto we only toured the Pantages and didn't see the show. Finnally around oh 91 or 92 we went to NYC for the first time and my dad took us to Phantom. I was so pumped up and ready to see it and then....nothing. It just was not what I had hoped it would be. I felt so bad for my dad too cause when we left the theatre he asked me how I liked and I looked at him and said "eh it was ok, the chandeler didn't fall very fast" He looked a little unhappy but looked back at me and said "well don't worry I didn't think it was that good either"........I've seen the show twice since, which I never thought I would. Both times with Ted Keegan playing the Phantom. And I liked it better, I think that with a good Phantom it's a more watchable show. But then again I might be biased because Mr. Keegan is a friend. Well that was long winded.

The Lion King. It tried so hard to outdo the movie and it couldn't. The jokes were old, and the one joke I remember them changing - "What do you want me to do, dress in drag and do the hula?" - was the one joke I think they shouldn't have changed. They also cut a verse out of The Madness of King Scar. I'm not sure why...and it was my favorite part, when he starts arguing with himself.

MOLLY (1974) about a Jewish Family living in the Bronx during the Depression.
Star, Kaye Ballard, sang song from show, "Go In The Best of Health" on "The Carol Burnett Show" and I really liked it, so I saw show.
Turns out the song was THE only good thing about show. Everything else (other songs, performances, direction, choreography, sets, lighting, the orangeade sold at Intermission) were TERRIBLE.
Apparantly, I was not alone in my opinions as MOLLY had enough staying power to last all of two months on Broadway.

Hairspray all the way. Everyone and their mother said it was good, and it was crap. The only thing I found good were the top 40 hits, which made up the 'score' of the show.

Aida. After reading about how fabulous it is on these boards, I simply had to see it. I felt terrible spending $100 a ticket on it. It wasn't terrible, but it was mediocre.

The Producers. And what was even more upsetting is that I paid full price. I really wanted to like it, but left there wondering what all the fuss was about.

PRODUCERS!!! I saw it with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick this past winter, and I was totally excited b/c of the big stink over it. Wow, I was soo disappointed.
Urinetown was 100% better.
POTO, Cats, and (heaven forbid) Rent were other ones.

To MargoChanning,
I gather from reading your previous posts (love them!),
that you have seen tonnes of shows - so I'd love to know
which ones let you down!

FOSSE before it closed.
Saw the original cast, then the closing cast. No comparison.

Phantom of the Opera and Aida. Phantom had some pretty sets and costumes but the score bored me to tears. Aida just looked like a mess of several different designs and concepts that never really served the story or cohesively fit together as a whole. It was a major let-down.
