re: Movie Musical Re-Make You Would Like To See Happen

I would like to see a remake of The Fantasticks, though it's not necessary because part of its charm is experiencing it live in a small theater. But I guess it could work on the big screen if placed in the right hands?

I agree with Hair but it's a bit...dated? Well, that's not really the right word but I don't know if it would appeal to a young audience.

King and I would be nice. So would The Sound of Music. But I'd hate to see them ruined. I know Carousel wasn't real big but that would be nice because if they ruined it less people would be mad!

Cabaret. A film adaptation closer to the book of the show and echoing the design of the 1998 revival would be amazing.

As much as I love Julie Taymor, another Jesus Christ Superstar (remember the 2000 TV version?) is unnecessary. Although that's not to say that the original 1973 film is perfect.

How amazing would Kristen Bell be as Audrey in a LITTLE SHOP re-make? She truly gets camp like few actresses, her performance in REEFER MADNESS was so in the style of LITTLE SHOP.
I think some of these would be better as TV films (LITTLE SHOP would be one of them, a la REEFER MADNESS which made for a wonderful TV movie).
I don't think A CHORUS LINE can successfully be translated into film, perhaps if Michael Bennett was still around, but really I rather not have another director have a go at it and ruin it again. Plus what BO names can they cast that would be able to perform the choreography?
Oh, and THE KING & I is a fantastic film that does NOT need a re-make. And CABARET is too perfect a movie, though I know there are a lot of people out there who are hoping for a more faithful adaptation, the Fosse film is basically a different musical altogether.

I would die if they remade Cabaret. The whole movie IS Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey's performances. I don't think I'd be able to keep myself from a murderous Hollywood rampage if they tried to cast anyone else! Instead, I'd like to see a PBS Great Performances-esque DVD release of the stage show so that there was a version available of the actual Broadway musical. Did they happen to film the '98 revival?

Movie musicals I'd like to see remade:
Kiss Me, Kate
Carousel
The Wiz
A Chorus Line
Brigadoon

I'm not sure I would like to see Claire Danes as Louise in GYPSY, but I definitely love the idea of Meryl Streep, Richard Gere, and Kristen Bell as Rose, Herbie, and Louise respectively. Anne Hathaway just seems like such an obvious choice for Louise, I think she is meant to play the role.
