re: Munk re-visits CHICAGO, DRS, and PRODUCERS

I was one of those early "critics" who was fairly lukewarm about DRS. I found the book overly schtick-laden and clunky and too-exposition-heavy in Act I and that the show generally cribbed and out and out stole the few decent bits from better shows. I thought the whole Gettelfinger subplot could have been dropped (though she's very good). The score had its moments (but had several undistinguished spots) and O'Brien's staging was fluid-enough (though he's done much better work), but Mitchell's choreography at times felt liked warmed over LaCage an Never Gonna Dance leftovers. The performances were good for the most part (though Butz pushed too hard at times and I thought Gleason was miscast -- I cold never buy someone with such a sharp and intelligent persona being a gullable ditz). The show had its moments, but really needed a re-write. I haven't seen it again and don't plan to -- I was underwhelmed.

I really loved DRS. I wouldn't see it again.

I agree with your chicago review. The producers one too actually because I saw JTE as Max over the summer filling in for Brad and I'm still pissed I went to see Hunter and he was out too. My whole cast was basically understudies except the amazing Angie who I agree has limitless talent in that role. Great reviews

munk,

I'll be seeing DRS next weekend. I didn't see the original cast but was wondering what you thought of the replacements. You made a general comment about them being good, but could you give a bit more detail? It seems like a very strong cast. Do they make up for what you see as problems with the show?

Thanks!

re: Munk re-visits CHICAGO, DRS, and PRODUCERS

Unfortunately, I saw Norbert's understudy. I was upset, but, whatever. He was good enough - he did his best Norbert impression, but he didn't do anything for me.

I liked Jonathan Pryce...it's a role that really has no resounance with me, I have no attachment to it at all. I was lukewarm about Lithgow's performance (I thought it was Lithgow playing Lithgow, however apropriate), and I liked Pryce. More comments to the audience, more breaking the fourth wall in a show that's already overly self-referential.

I liked Rachel York, I always have - but she didn't impress me, persay. Maybe it's just because by the time she makes her entrance, I was already bored - but she was more than suitable. No complaints whatsoever.

Thanks, munk. I'll post my review after I return from my trip. I have nothing to compare it to, so maybe I'll find it fresh and funny. I hope so. re: Munk re-visits CHICAGO, DRS, and PRODUCERS
