Munk's CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG review

Posted: 4/15/05 at 4:59pmI thought PIAZZA's orchestrations were fine, but ALL SHOOK UP's stand out more in the same way that MOVIN' OUT and ASSASSINS' orchestrations did - they had somethign to compare them to. Compared to the old Billy Joel songs, MOVIN' OUT sounds amazing and deserved to win. Compared to the original ASSASSINS recording, the new orchestrations were amazing. So, I think ALL SHOOK UP will and should win.

I am holding with my belief that no matter how good or bad the reviews are for Chitty and no matter what awards it does or does not win, Chitty will run far longer than most (if not all) of this season's musicals. I never predicted it would win an award. I have said that Chitty is simply a fun evening, even if you hate the genre (as Munk wrote)and go for free (whatever that has to do with it). Why go in to see a show planning to hate it? That is what I call a dare you to entertain me attitude. If one hates a genre, one doesnt have to see everything simply because it is there.

'Chitty will run far longer than most (if not all) of the cureent season's Bway shows'
I totally disagree. When I saw it the audience seemed almost bored and they only received polite applause. I don't think Chitty will last very long if they don't work on it before opening night. The kids might keep it open for a bit but I'm not hopeful.
I loved this show when I saw it in London. The Broadway production with its changes left me very cold and bored. It looked very messy and slow-moving to me and Raul looked almost lost occasionally, I didn't find him believeable in that role.

I'm going to hate to have to give not-perfect comments on him, but it's so inevitable. Poor thing, lost.

Emcee, I'm really curious to hear your comments once you have seen it. I know you will be a 'fair' reviewer.

Posted: 4/16/05 at 11:52amI loved this show! I was in NY last week and saw 6 shows (Chitty Chitty, DRS, Avenue Q, BATB, Phantom, and All Shook Up), and this show was probally the most entertaining. No, I would never think a show like this would win Best Musical. But if your a looking for a show of pure entertainment and spectacle, go see this! If this show wins any Tony's it will only be for the Scenic Design.

Posted: 4/16/05 at 2:48pmI don't think I'll see Chitty. It looks fluffy, despite your excellent review. I'd see it for Kevin Cahoon (The Foreigner-He was great in that) and Marc Kudisch (Awesome Propetier)
