Murney to do 6-show weeks?#1
Posted: 2/5/07 at 5:14pmThey're speculating over on ATC that Julia Murney is getting cut to a 6-show week, due to vocal problems. Any truth to the rumor?

Posted: 2/5/07 at 5:18pmNope. The last time I spoke with someone in the cast they said Murney (whose been out twice since she started in New York) was just having a bit of trouble acclimating in and that she'd still maintain a full schedule.

Posted: 2/5/07 at 5:52pmI recall hearing that Kendra Kassebaum did 6 show weeks on tour, is that true for NY as well?

Posted: 2/5/07 at 6:35pmBoth Murney and Kassebaum did 6 weeks shows on tour. With a show like Wicked it is understandable to do 6 shows on tour. Touring is harder because when you change places there is weather changes and it can mess with your voice. Since they are in New York and in one place, they will probably be doing 8 shows a week.

Posted: 2/5/07 at 8:06pmAlso, its not like Kendra and Julia have never done 8 preformances a week before. I don't think it will be a problem. Sure, its hard to adjust after touring. On a tour like Wicked its understandable to do 6 shows a week with traveling and all taking a huge toll on your body.

It's very unlikely. Although I do think that they should do an alternate Elphaba like they do with Christine in Phantom. It makes a lot of sense.
If this does end up happening, she'll probably be out for matinees. But then again, it's very unlikely. Julia has only missed two shows so far due to a common cold. Kendra has missed one. Just because they only did 6 on tour does not mean that this is what's going to happen on Broadway. Touring in Wicked takes a very big toll on your body so 6 shows a week is completely understandable.

Posted: 2/5/07 at 8:20pmThey should not have an alternate Elphaba. The reason why they have an alternet Christine in phantom is something that is over my head anyways. There are roles like Elphaba that are eiather more or as vocally demanding and yet the singers are able to do it 8 times a week.

Regarding the alternate Christine issue, Andrew Lloyd Webber made it a requirement that the actress playing Christine must have an alternate to go on twice a week. The only actress allowed to play Christine for eight performances a week was Dale Kristien in the Los Angeles production of The Phantom of the Opera.
I don't think Elphaba needs an alternate. She may sing a lot, but it's definitely a role you can do eight times a week.
