It is based on the play "La Ronde" by Arthur Schnitzer. It is a series of ten scenes, each involving a couple. One partner changes with each scene - for instance:
There is a scene with a soldier and prostitute. The next scene is the prostiitute and a shy young man. The next scene is the shy young man and an older woman. and so on and so on until the soldier from the first scene returns.
Those aren't reallyt the characters - I'm just explaining how the show works.
There is also a play called "Blue Room" based on the same source. In it, one man and one woman play all the roles. Nicole Kidman did it on Broadway - and got lots of press for appearing in the nude.

LaChiusa is my favorite composer and this was the first show of his that I listened to. My favorites songs are "Tom," "Mistress of the Senator," and "Some Other Life." All three women who sing them on the recording, Carolee Carmello, Michelle Pawk, and Judy Blazer respectively give perfect renditions. Strange show (as are all of LaChiusa's shows) but works very well.

For on the recording of Mistress you can't see John Dossett's reaction to Pawk which was equally important in that scene. And on the recording of Tom you can know what Dennis Parlato and the amazing Donna Murphy were doing that made that scene unforgettable.
