Musical Theater Opposites

X is the opposite of Y, and why? These can be composers, actors, shows, even characters or songs. I'll start.

Stephen Sondheim is the opposite of Paul Williams- Sondheim is known for being complex and brilliantly lyrical and intellectual, but not known much for melody in the public eye. His contemporary, Paul Williams, though incredibly gifted with melody, has very little lyrical depth, though his best songs are forever memorable for melody or sentiment. (Admit it, you cry when you hear Rainbow Connection.)

Pippin is the opposite of American Idiot- both are metatheatrical shows with psychological constructs that appear as people, yet Pippin says "There is hope and possibility to be found in an average, anonymous life" whereas AI says "Average, Anonymous life sucks, but there really is no other option."
