Posted: 6/23/04 at 1:01pmHey everybody I'll be applying to college in the fall.. I was wondering ...do most major musical theatre colleges (like NYU) go for talent or grades ? If your talented but your grades are ok , do you still have a shot? Is it all about the audition? Is it good to do early decision? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would think if you are auditioing for a music school, the music school is interested in your talent (singing, dancing, acting).
However, the school (at large) is interested in your graeds and have admissions policies. If you do not meet the minimum entrance requirements, the school will not admitt you even if the music school accepts you (hope that makes sense).
Advice: Always apply for admission to the school first. I know some people who auditioned and were accepted to the music school, but then were not accepted to school. They were not allowed to attend the music school.
Also, grades make a difference in scholarships awarded by the school and the music school (although the music school may offer scholarships just based on talent).
For questions about musical theater colleges, I high recommend you check out collegeconfidential.com's message board. There is a thread (now up to section 20) with details about every MT college in the US.

I think you must either have the "penis factor" or a 4.5 GPA! A lot of people that have come out of Tisch are extremely talented, but there have been instances where the smartest actor doesn't make you the most talented either.

and many of the widely respected musical theatre schools are difficult to moderately difficult to get into academically:
U Mich, CMU, Syracuse, NYU, Northwestern, even Penn State..if you arent the brightest - u may want to try Florida St., Miami or a conservatory like Boston Cons. or CCM (although many conservatories are - rightfully so - hard on talent)
