Musical Version of Little Women--Questions

I read that Sutton Foster has been cast as "Jo" and will begin rehearsal in Sept 2004 for the musical version of "Little Women". Is this the first time this has been done as a musical? Who wrote it--especially the music and songs?

I'm very curious since I love the book by Louisa May Alcott and have seen the various movies with Katherine Hepburn (my favorite "Jo"), June Allyson, and Winona Ryder.

Just a broadway rookie...

I love Katherine Hepburn as Jo!
"The stage is where I live and come alive and act out all the things that go on in my life. It's not just what I do for a living, it's my shrink and my love affair. No one in my life has ever or ever will kiss me on the mouth like this lover called my relationship with my performance."

There was an off-Broadway musical in the mid-60s called "Jo" that ran about 6 weeks. You'd have to check Theatre World.

There was an opera version done at NY City Opera very recently, last season maybe, that worked well. I believe it was televised and ought to be available at the Museum of Television and Radio if it is not available to rent.

My one concern about the source material is what will the conflict be? A love story with the insipid Laurie? Becoming a writer? Both?

Coming of age as a woman during the Civil War? Women against the world? Marmee and her girls were of sturdy New England stock. Laurie and Prof. Baer will provide moderate tension lines...Amy is a good nemesis. Beth is the teary part. Meg is the ever-present younger version of Marmee...
