I know there have been posts like these before, but....

What's a good show for a university/college to do? The student drama society at our school now has a student levy, and they're deciding to blow their money on doing "The Wizard of Oz", which I think is an awful idea. It's well-known, yes, but it's essentially a children's musical, and the production values are gonna kill them. They've never done a musical before, and I think they are way in over their heads.

So what's a good musical for a university student group to do? Something that has a large cast, that doesn't require amazing singers or dancers, that features a mostly female cast, that isn't too over-the-top in production values....and preferrably something well-known?

Avenue Q! Wait not exactly all female, and the rights aren't avaliable. But hey, if thats not a college musical then what it?

I might suggest AIDA, since the rights are/or are about to become avaliable. Though you will need guys.

Nine
Chicago

Pippin can be done with mostly women if you've got enough decent males for the leads.

Might I suggest the MTI Show Selector.

I second Chicago.

Chicago just isn't the same without the Fosse-styled choreography. It's essentially a dance musical, and....well, some people can't dance. re: Musical for a university/college

Any other suggestions?

Hmm...are you acting in the show? I remember you mentioning you're an Asian male and really the only show I can think of with lots of women (and actually, lots of men) is Miss Saigon. And you could be Thuy! (Not meant to be a slight against Asians, seeing as I'm one myself.)

Seriously, Miss Saigon would be cool, if they could get the rights and actually make it look good. And it's hardly choreography-dependent.

My 3 picks are Chicago, Miss Saigon and Aida.

LOL - no, I won't be in it, I'm too busy this year (but thanks for thinking of me!). I'm just really surprised and concerned at my student drama society's choice in a musical, so I want to persuade them to change their mind. But first I need some shows that will sway their stand.

Miss Saigon would be amazing, but waay over our league. You need some phenomenal singers to play Kim, Chris, Ellen and John. Thuy, that's manageable. re: Musical for a university/college

I did Wizard of Oz in grade 6 (looong time ago) and even now I remember it really sucked as a show. Quite different from the movie, and kinda boring. Why that, of all shows?

I don't think the rights to Chicago are available yet.

OH! ROCKY HORROR SHOW! Yeah, baby.

I have no idea. This drama society is infamous for its poor choices. They declined to do "The Laramie Project" because it had too many monologues, and they wanted to do something with more dialogue. ???

They were also adamant on doing Rent, but had they just consulted with me, they would have known that the rights were not available.

I hate it when people don't know what they're talking about or doing. Grrrr!

I think you can get the rights. A couple of years ago when I went to Cape Cod, a community theater was doing it, but unfortunately it was sold out. re: Musical for a university/college
