I think it's sharper and more perceptive than FORBIDDEN BROADWAY (the last time I saw that show it was pretty lame).
I did an interview with Craig Fols of the New York production. It's archived here under "Interviews". He shared quite a few tidbits about the show and how it was created.

I haven't seen the show, but am a fan of the cast recording. I haven't laughed so hard from just a recording in a long time. When the SWEENEY factory whistle blows and someone mentions that someone is at the door, I nearly wet my pants.

You make me wanna sing a showtune
The kind that used to be all the rage
A good old hummable, liftable showtune
There's no reason for the rhymin'
Cause we're only markin' time
Until the star gets back on stage

It's really funny if you're a big fan of musicals throughout the ages. Be careful who you see it with -- I brought a co-worker who is an occasional theatergoer, and he didn't get a lot of the jokes.
It's enjoyable, but I wouldn't spend a ton of money on it. I got my tickets via play by play (thus, $3). I would have been really ticked off if I had paid the full price of around $60 for the show.

It's funny, but only if you know A LOT about the shows of these composers: Rodgers and Hammerstein, Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Kander and Ebb, and Jerry Herman. I, for example, know a lot about quite a few Rodgers and Hammerstein shows, show that section is absolutely hilarious to me. However most of the Kander and Ebb section is completely lost on me.
The main problem I have with the show is that it suffers from not knowing exactly what it's trying to be: It jumps from being simply shows in the exaggerated style of the composers (which would be funny enough) to actually parodying the composers. (for example, in the Andrew Lloyd Webber segment, a phantom sings about his song which he "wrote himself in early 1987" though "it might sound just a teeny like something by Puccini.") These bit are alright, but too Forbidden Broadway-esque (only not as funny.) In short: if you're expecting funny, obnoxious songs in the exaggerated styles of composers, yeah, you're going to get that, but you're going to get more. In this case, however, less would be better.
So if you're someone who knows a lot about a lot of shows by those five composers and you can get fairly cheap tickets, I say check it out. Or you can just get the cast recording.

Posted: 7/4/05 at 7:37pmSee it! I haven't seen it but the soundtrack is funny! They're taking the ideal style of different musical composers and making fun of their type of style. It's not like, "Ha, you suck!" it's like, "Well so&so always has this type of music therefore, the next skit will have a similar style." if that makes sence. whatever just see it!
