I was very amused at the Brewers v. Giants game today. As one of the Brewers players was coming up to bat I heard a familiar tune. I turned to my friend (who actually doesn't know squat about musicals) and asked, "...is that the overture to Les Mis?" It was! I actually had to laugh just because it seemed a little dramatic for a baseball game, but we ended up scoring 2 runs so whatever works I suppose.
Anything like that happen to you folks (e.g. hearing songs at public events)?

Um i was in an Amish store and they had this like music box that played phantom. I heard it from the other side of the store and i like followed the sound all "Is that phantom?!"
Also one time while at a hotel in philadelphia, they had a player piano playing It's a Grand Nigt for singing from State Fair.

When I went to see RENT-the-movie, they played Defying Gravity not once but twice.
When I saw Madagascar with my little sister, they played Here I Am (after talking extensively about John Lithgow) and Streetsinger from BKLYN.
It was odd.

That happened to me too, except I was in the line for tickets. At first I was like, "Is that...is that DRS?" and then I was like, "Oh my god it's 'Here I Am'!" jumped up, and started singing and dancing. My friends were embarassed and everyone else in line was like, "what the hell is wrong with her?"

I can't say anything about showtunes in other venues, but as far as baseball games go, I believe the players each choose the song that plays when they come up to bat. Pay attention sometime and the same song will play every time.
So I don't find it so amazing that Les Mis was blasting through a baseball park as I do that one of the players chose the overture as his theme song over all the other songs in existence. He is officially my favorite pro athlete. :)
